A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

Having been back in school for four weeks, we are well and truly into the swing of things. This week in tutor time students were elected to take part in our Student Parliament: a group of elected student representatives from each form and each year group, who meet to discuss issues, make decisions and influence change within the school. The students voted in are: Ella B, Shivali C, Haizea MP, Eva E, Sharvi A, Amelie M, Arya K, Imogen D, Charlotte M, Alice B, Rima G, Ada H, Bella F, Erin D, Matilda D, Lucy L, Gabriella H, Charlotte W, Ella M, Amber H, Lara B, Viola C and Isabela N. Well done to all of them! Last week Year 9 welcomed a guest speaker who came in to talk about air pollution and hosted a workshop on Green and Healthy Travel as a part of Our Air, Our Action – Richmond Council’s environmental project. Pupils agreed that how they travel was very important and so we are asking all pupils, teachers and staff to try to switch one car journey a week to sustainable travel (walking, cycling, scooting or taking public transport). We’re excited to hear how you all get on! Year 9 baked some incredible sweet treats which were sold as part of our Macmillan Coffee Morning today, the Year 11 house captains were very impressed by their creativity. Thank you! Well done to 9PIR who are topping the Epraise league table this week for Year 9! They are closely followed by 9FDR and 9EDA. It is great to see so many epraise points awarded - lets keep up the great work! Over the past 20 years Waldegrave School has supported Read for Good with an annual Readathon, raising over £50,000, a record we are very proud of. This charity provides books and story tellers on children’s wards in hospitals around the country. During October we will be running the Readathon once again and we would like to encourage every pupil to read as much as possible this month in return for sponsorship. The money raised will support Read for Good and help us buy books for the school library as well. See email sent home for full details. As the weather gets colder, more students are bringing in coats to wear outside. Please ensure all clothes have name labels on them, as it is very easy for these to be misplaced.

MRS LYDDON, HEAD OF YEAR 9

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Housemaid’ by Freida McFadden Millie is a young, beautiful woman who takes a job as a live-in housekeeper for a wealthy couple, Nina and Andrew. For Millie, who has a criminal record, it’s a fantastic job - until it’s not. Things go downhill quickly as Nina exhibits increasingly bizarre behavior and Millie’s room in the attic only locks from the outside… If you are someone who loves a good page-turner then this is definitely the book for you. It isn’t too long and the chapters are relatively short; getting straight to the point. Although the whole plot is a little farfetched, it is definitely full of suspense and action. Unlike some thrillers which may seem overly dark or confusing this one is easier to get into making it a great pick for anyone new to the genre. This book is a must-read for any thriller lovers out there - it’s fast paced, suspenseful and full of twists that will keep you hooked. Unlike some thrillers which may seem overly dark or confusing this one is easier to get into making it a great pick for anyone new to the genre.
