After a sabbatical I rejoined Pamarco in Roselle as Plant Manager, then VP of Manufacturing until I eventually be- came President in 2010. Our industry has gone through lots of change; the transition from mechanically engraved anilox to laser (Pamarco now has 14 lasers), the new itera- tions of the laser engravers bringing greater speeds, finer screens and more consistency.

In the customer base, consolidation seems to be the biggest driver particularly in corrugated and Wide Web flexible packaging. Early in my career all wide web presses were equipped with shafter rolls and were maximum 6 col- ors; now it’s the norm to have at least a 10-color CI press equipped with sleeves for plate mounting and anilox. Of course, digital has also made an entrance, particularly into label & corrugated, but rather than a threat to flexo, it has made the quality requirement in flexo stronger. BCN: What are your thoughts on the anniversary itself? Burgess: 80 years is a great achievement. Pamarco started as a privately held business in 1946 and transi- tioned to equity in the 1990s, but it has managed to re- tain long serving, very loyal and skilled employees. The Pamarco name continues to be the standard bearer in the worldwide anilox industry. BCN: What are your future goals for the company? Burgess: We recently opened [a facility] in Germany to service Europe, particularly the mainland, and the next log- ical step is to look for an acquisition or manage a green- field project in SE Asia or the Indian sub-continent to take advantage of the developing markets in that region and to service the growing number of OEM customers in the region. BCN: Any insights on the current state of the industry you can provide as a long-time supplier and leader? Burgess: The industry is very healthy. Machine sales have been depressed for a couple of years due to geo-po- litical issues coupled with the downslide after Covid, but this now appears to be on the upswing. Our customer base is strong and getting stronger, particularly with the consolidation in the big two market sectors, and flexo is a very good method to print, economical, high quality and flexible, so the future is very bright. The company’s Gainesville, Georgia, facility was opened in the early 1970s.
