DEDICATED TO LAUGHING MORE IN 2023 That’s My New Year’s Resolution

We’ve made it through another year full of ups and downs and can now focus our attention on what’s to come in 2023. In many ways, the new year gives us a fresh start as we’re able to reset our goals and refresh our focus. Over the next few days and weeks, plenty of us will start putting together plans to ensure our New Year’s resolutions can be accomplished. If you haven’t thought about your goals for the new year, now is the time to do so.

Look at dieting as an example. Many people will try to find shortcuts or quick hacks to help their dieting journey. They’ll stop eating sugar altogether or try to go to the gym multiple times a day. These habits end up being too drastic, and the individual is unable to maintain them for an extended period. This quickly leads to burnout, and the individual gives up on their resolution. Instead, make small changes you can maintain for the rest of the year — and potentially for the rest of your life.

In the past, like many Americans, I have set a resolution to get in better shape and eat healthier, but this year, I want to aim for something different. I want to include more laughter in my everyday life, and I encourage you to do the same. We all have days or moments when things seem grim or difficult, and it just feels like we can’t escape our depression or anxiety. That’s where laughter

Another important step toward maintaining your New Year’s resolutions is accountability.

“Things in our lives seem to go better when we’re laughing more often.”

You have to hold yourself accountable, but it can make keeping your

resolutions easier if you have a strong community of friends and family supporting

I’m someone who likes to laugh out loud whenever I find something humorous. I’ve found that laughter is a great way to connect with my patients and improve their day. Laughter even helps strengthen my own outlook on life. When we’re in good spirits and regularly laughing, it’s much easier to laugh off simple problems. Things in our lives seem to go better when we’re laughing more often. So don’t take yourself too seriously! Laugh and enjoy life at every opportunity. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself, either! One of the most challenging aspects of New Year’s resolutions is sticking with them. A recent study found that 64% of individuals give up on their resolutions before January has even ended. If you continually find yourself in this position every year, there are things you can do to help produce a better outcome. Many make the mistake of aiming too high with their resolutions. They want to accomplish something that’s potentially impossible or unobtainable, and their means to do so are equally impossible. This can lead to a frustrating situation where you just want to give up. To avoid this, take small steps to reach your goals.

you as you try to better yourself. When you let people who love and respect you in on the goals you set for yourself, you’ll be more motivated. And don’t forget to return the encouragement so your loved ones can accomplish their goals, too!

I hope you can accomplish whatever New Year’s resolutions you have. With

accountability and gradual steps, you can do whatever you put your mind to. Happy New Year!

WHAT YOU SHOULD AND SHOULDN’T DO Invisalign and Eating

If you recently started wearing Invisalign, you’ve probably had some questions about what you should and shouldn’t do, especially with regard to your eating habits. Thankfully, you don’t have to adjust too much. Follow the rules listed here, and you’ll be well on your way to a straighter, healthier smile. Drink water: Water is vital to your overall health, so you need to continue drinking ample amounts of water throughout your treatment. It’s okay to drink cold or room temperature water while wearing Invisalign, but don’t drink hot water as it can melt or change the shape of your aligners. You should also remove your aligners when drinking soft drinks or sparkling water. • WHAT YOU SHOULD DO • Keep your Invisalign in their case while eating: Many people make the mistake of setting their aligners on the table or in a napkin while they eat. This causes them to throw their aligners away accidentally. To avoid this, put them in their case whenever you are not using them. • Brush after you eat: It’s always important to brush after eating a meal, but it’s even more vital if you wear Invisalign. When you put your Invisalign in directly after eating, food particles remain trapped, and bacteria will begin to multiply. If you can’t find a time or place to brush, swish and swallow with water several

times, replace your aligners and brush as soon as you can. • Continue the same diet: You don’t need to adjust your diet while wearing Invisalign. As long as you remove your aligners before eating, you can eat or drink whatever you want.

WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T DO •

Eat while wearing Invisalign: Eating while wearing your aligners is incredibly risky, regardless of how soft or small the food may be. Food and drinks (other than water) can damage or stain the Invisalign, requiring you to order a replacement set. • Forget to put your Invisalign back in: To get the maximum effectiveness out of your Invisalign, you need to wear it for at least 22 hours a day. The extra two hours are for meals and cleaning your teeth. Make sure you put your aligners back in after every meal, or treatment will take longer. To help remember to put them back in, ALWAYS set a timer before removing your aligners! This will knock out all the forgetting!

Wearing Your Retainer Is Important

Here Are 3 Reasons Why

THEY STABILIZE YOUR BITE. Orthodontic treatment also helps straighten your bite so your top and bottom teeth line up well. Since your teeth have been slowly moving over the past few months or years, the soft tissue and bone around your teeth need time to adjust to the changes made in tooth positioning. Retainers provide that necessary time. RETAINERS MAINTAIN SPACE FOR NEW TEETH. Many kids and teenagers often undergo orthodontic treatment when their wisdom teeth first erupt. They can keep this space open for new teeth that are growing in, including their wisdom teeth, by wearing a retainer. Failing to utilize a retainer during this time can cause their teeth to shift, which can then cause crowding in the mouth due to a lack of space for the new teeth growing in. Wearing your retainer will help ensure your orthodontic treatment is as successful as possible. We’ll be glad to help if you have any questions or concerns about your retainers.

There’s nothing quite like the celebratory feeling our patients feel when they get their braces removed or have finished their Invisalign treatment. While this is undoubtedly an occasion worth celebrating, your orthodontic treatment is not complete yet. After your teeth have been straightened, you will need to wear a retainer to help maintain your smile. If you don’t want your teeth to revert to how they were before treatment, you will need to wear your retainer every night. It might seem difficult at first, but with patience and perseverance, you’ll grow accustomed to your retainer.

If you think you don’t need to wear your retainer, think again. Here’s why you should utilize your retainer.

RETAINERS HELP YOUR TEETH HOLD THEIR POSITION. This is probably the most well-known reason for wearing a retainer. Many people undergo orthodontic treatment to remove gaps between their teeth. Your teeth may have shifted a considerable amount, and your mouth needs time to adapt to these changes. The retainer keeps your teeth where they are, giving them more time to stabilize.

3 Unique Winter Activities to Experience PAGE 4

Want to Try Something New This Winter?

CHECK OUT THESE 3 UNIQUE ACTIVITIES

Throughout winter, we have the opportunity to participate in many activities that are only possible during this season. We can ski, snowboard, snowshoe, sled, and more. While some people fly south for winter vacations to escape the cold weather, others travel to extraordinary winter destinations within our country. Plenty of options are available if you’re looking for a truly unique experience this winter. Here are three winter activities that will leave you with long-lasting memories. SNOWMOBILE TOURS IN ALASKA Alaska is one of America’s hidden gems, even though it’s the biggest U.S. state. If you’re looking for unique winter experiences, you’ll want to visit Alaska. One of the coolest adventures you can experience is a snowmobile tour. You can hop aboard a snowmobile and ride the same path as the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race or visit some beautiful mountains and glaciers. Many of these tours will lead you right past moose, bears, and caribou as you take in the beauty of Alaska’s environment. SKATING ON MIRROR LAKE AT LAKE PLACID Lake Placid, New York, had the privilege of hosting the Winter Olympics twice, so it’s no surprise they have some amazing cold weather activities to showcase. A truly exceptional experience is

skating on Mirror Lake. They have a 2-mile-long ice track where you can test your speed and areas for people to skate openly or play a game of ice hockey. You can even participate in dog sledding there. It’s a beautiful area filled with various winter activities. ICE FISHING EXCURSIONS IN BRAINERD, MINNESOTA While fishing might be more commonly known as a spring or summer activity, you can get plenty of fishing done in the winter if you know where to go. Brainerd is considered one of the best places to visit for ice fishing enthusiasts. There are over 300 fishing lakes near the

city, and you can expect to catch bluegill, walleye, largemouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike, and many others. If you like to fish throughout the year, check out Brainerd.
