Wearing Your Retainer Is Important

Here Are 3 Reasons Why

THEY STABILIZE YOUR BITE. Orthodontic treatment also helps straighten your bite so your top and bottom teeth line up well. Since your teeth have been slowly moving over the past few months or years, the soft tissue and bone around your teeth need time to adjust to the changes made in tooth positioning. Retainers provide that necessary time. RETAINERS MAINTAIN SPACE FOR NEW TEETH. Many kids and teenagers often undergo orthodontic treatment when their wisdom teeth first erupt. They can keep this space open for new teeth that are growing in, including their wisdom teeth, by wearing a retainer. Failing to utilize a retainer during this time can cause their teeth to shift, which can then cause crowding in the mouth due to a lack of space for the new teeth growing in. Wearing your retainer will help ensure your orthodontic treatment is as successful as possible. We’ll be glad to help if you have any questions or concerns about your retainers.

There’s nothing quite like the celebratory feeling our patients feel when they get their braces removed or have finished their Invisalign treatment. While this is undoubtedly an occasion worth celebrating, your orthodontic treatment is not complete yet. After your teeth have been straightened, you will need to wear a retainer to help maintain your smile. If you don’t want your teeth to revert to how they were before treatment, you will need to wear your retainer every night. It might seem difficult at first, but with patience and perseverance, you’ll grow accustomed to your retainer.

If you think you don’t need to wear your retainer, think again. Here’s why you should utilize your retainer.

RETAINERS HELP YOUR TEETH HOLD THEIR POSITION. This is probably the most well-known reason for wearing a retainer. Many people undergo orthodontic treatment to remove gaps between their teeth. Your teeth may have shifted a considerable amount, and your mouth needs time to adapt to these changes. The retainer keeps your teeth where they are, giving them more time to stabilize.
