DECEMBER 2022
Shedd Aquarium. My wife had been there as a kid and loved it, so she wanted me to experience it with her. We had a fantastic time!
I had to take a business trip to San Diego shortly after we got married, and my wife came along for the adventure. When we got there, we couldn’t check into the hotel, so we left our bags with the concierge and headed straight to the San Diego Zoo. I remember seeing pandas there, which was the first time I ever saw them with my own eyes. They were so slow-moving that I wondered how predators in the wild didn’t hunt them. One of our most extraordinary animal experiences took place in Florida. We were there for spring break, and it was too cold to head to the beach. Instead, we went north toward the Everglades. It was much hotter there! We ended up at an alligator conservatory, where we rode on an airboat and saw alligator eggs and babies before seeing the fully grown adults. There was even an opportunity to pet or hold baby gators. My daughters also love animals and never miss an opportunity to visit a zoo. My oldest daughter's favorite animal is the cheetah, which we don’t have at the Detroit Zoo. While driving back from a vacation in Myrtle Beach, we decided to swing through Washington, D.C., to visit the Smithsonian Zoo. It was hotter than anyone expected, so the cheetah spent his time relaxing in the shade. It was difficult to see between the cheetahs’ spots and dense foliage even though they were six feet from the enclosure’s outer fence. Later that summer, my wife took the girls to the Columbus Zoo to see the cheetah run. There’s a golden retriever who lives there with the cheetah. They’ll get the two running, and before long, the cheetah takes off at full speed. Seeing a cheetah run over 50 mph must have been one amazing experience for them. Zoos allow us to learn more about the animals who share this planet with us. It teaches us the importance of conservation and brings awareness to animals whose habitats are being destroyed. I learn something new every time I visit the zoo. If you head to the zoo this winter, I hope you have a great time! You may even see me there!
LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS! OH … YEAH! MY LOVE FOR THE ZOO
The winter season is upon us, and many Michiganders use this opportunity to lock themselves in the warmth of their homes, only coming out when absolutely necessary. That won’t be the case for my family, though. We’ll spend plenty of time outside throughout the winter, ensuring our 110-pound Bernese Mountain dog, Weston, gets his exercise. He doesn’t let the cold or snow bother him. He’ll frolic around and show no signs that his paws are freezing. He’s in his element and absolutely loves it. Weston isn’t the only one who enjoys getting out in the cold. I appreciate it myself, and one of my favorite places to visit in the winter is the Detroit Zoo. When you visit the zoo in the winter, you don’t need to worry about crowds or lines to see the animals. Sometimes you even get a really cool experience seeing the animals up close in their indoor habitats when it’s too cold for them to walk around outside. We go to the zoo regularly throughout the year. We love visiting the new penguin house, seeing polar bears in the Arctic Ring of Life, walking between kangaroos in the Australian Outback Adventure, and watching the giraffes. My youngest daughter adores giraffes, so they’re always a must-see for us. There’s always something new to learn or see when you visit the zoo. Zoos, aquariums, and other wildlife centers are some of my family’s favorite places to visit. We always find ourselves exploring these places whenever we travel somewhere new. When my wife and I were dating, we took a trip to Chicago for my birthday. Of course, we visited Sears Tower, the Cheesecake Factory, and other well- known Chicago tourist attractions, but our very first stop was to

By Following These Tips FIND A TRUSTWORTHY DRY CLEANER
To get in the holiday spirit this season, consider making a family trip to your local theater. There are a surprising number of benefits to seeing a play in person. 1. YOU’LL SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY. Theater companies are almost always local organizations, and many of them are nonprofits. That means the money you spend on your tickets will go into the pockets of the actors and/or right back into the company to bring more productions to the community. 2. YOUR KIDS COULD DISCOVER AN INTEREST IN THE ARTS. Your children might have a passion for acting or stage design. They’ll never know unless they see both firsthand. 3. YOU’LL PROVOKE FAMILY DISCUSSIONS. Chatting about the play with your family during intermission and the drive home will help you learn more about each other and forge stronger bonds. What did your kids enjoy about the plot? Which character did your spouse identify with most? Are there any plot holes or unanswered questions that are bothering them? 5 Reasons To See a Play This Season The Theater Is Calling Your Name
Whether you’re moving to a new area or are new to the idea of dry cleaning, finding reliable services can be difficult, especially if you don’t know what to avoid. You want to leave your garments at a dry cleaner where you know they’ll stay protected while being thoroughly cleaned. Thankfully, there are a few ways to ensure you’re taking your clothes and garments to the best place in town.
Here are five tips to help you find a trustworthy local dry cleaner.
ASK FOR LOCAL RECOMMENDATIONS. Discuss your dry-cleaning needs with your friends, family, and other familiar faces in the community for recommendations on the best place to use. You should also check with local consignment or clothing retailers for their suggestions. You’re sure to be pointed in the right direction. AVOID FRANCHISES. Cleaning franchises have locations across the nation, and while they may be everywhere, they may not be reliable. Franchises are all about convenience, processing large amounts of goods in a short amount of time, and getting customers in the door. You will not get a personalized or unique experience, and they might not take proper care of your items. INSPECT ONLINE REVIEWS. Check out Google or Facebook for reviews on reputable businesses in any industry, including dry cleaners. Look for dry cleaners with a high number of reviews, ideally five-star ratings, and read through them. Read the most recent comments to ensure a business is maintaining high standards. LOOK FOR EXPERIENCE. If you want a reliable dry cleaner, look for one that’s been around for years. Look through the business website to see when it first opened or read the oldest online reviews. If the dry cleaner hasn’t been local for very long, see if they’ve been elsewhere. Some cleaners will operate for a decade in one town, then move to another. TALK TO A REAL PERSON. The best way to ensure you’ve found the best local dry cleaning is to talk to a representative. Talk to them in person or give them a call so you can ask any questions you may have. At Janet Davis Cleaners, we are always here for you. Give us a call with your dry- cleaning questions today!
4. YOU’LL BOOST YOUR FAMILY’S LITERARY KNOWLEDGE. A study from the University of Arkansas Department of
Education Reform found that students remembered more about stories like “A Christmas Carol” after watching
them as plays than they did after watching movies or even reading the original books. Exposing your kids to the work of Shakespeare and Dickens at the theater is a great way to help them get ahead in their studies. 5. YOUR KIDS WILL DEVELOP THEIR TOLERANCE AND EMPATHY. The same study out of Arkansas found that students who attended the theater scored higher on tolerance and empathy tests. Watching live helped them identify and relate to the emotional turmoil of the characters. This winter, check your local theaters for holiday-themed productions like "A Christmas Carol," “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and "Miracle on 34th Street." You’ll bring your family closer and embrace the holiday spirit one curtain call at a time.
