The Gift of Time How We Make Each Moment Count

W hen you become a parent, your holiday became my job to create the Christmas magic. Over the years, what that magic looks like has changed. As Isabella gets older, I’ve been taking a step back from buying her a bunch of toys and/or stuff. Her grandma and her aunts have that covered. They spoil her so much by packing presents under the Christmas tree that they even outshine Santa Claus, himself, sometimes! But when I think about gifts for my daughter, lately I’ve been thinking along the lines of giving her valuable experiences. She’s six years old now, and she’s at that point where making memories is important. Going into 2020, I want to give Isabella the gift of time and good memories rather than things she’ll outgrow. I love seeing her face light up when we go to Disney World, but I’ve found that the gift of time can be as simple as taking my daughter to the library and reading together. Those small moments are really what create those big memories she will cherish. Yes, we remember fun trips to Disney World, but life isn’t entirely made up of big, splashy events. everyday living is spent in small moments in traffic, eating breakfast or sitting on the couch after work. It’s up to us to make those small moments memorable. I love taking Isabella to school and experiencing that special one-on-one time we get to have in the car. Being able to sit down and eat breakfast with her in the morning is always awesome, and I’m so happy to help her with her homework when I can. These aren’t moments that kids really remember, but they recognize the feeling of their parent being there for them. When I give my daughter the gift of time, that’s what I want her to get. I don’t want there to be a doubt in her mind that she’s loved and that her dad is going to be there for her no matter what. When folks retire, they have more time on their hands. That thrill of no longer needing to wake up early to go to work wears off. Our time is so valuable, and it’s a shame to feel like you have too much of it. Part of being a retirement planner means helping my clients plan for that extra time they’re going to have. What can they do to create great experiences and memories with their families, friends, spouses, and themselves? The answer is different for everyone, and it’s always a privilege to help my clients build a plan professional before making any investment decision. so they can spend their gift of time wisely and efficiently.

Many folks know I’ve been going through some difficult times this past year. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the support I’ve received from friends, family, and colleagues. Looking ahead to 2020, I’m dedicated to making this the best year ever for us all. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. May you have plenty of time to spend with your loved ones during the holiday season and in the coming year, and may all your memories be plentiful. -Adam Wolf, CPA, CFP ® Annuity guarantees rely on the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer.
