Portland Art Guide December 2022

Bernard Geiser was a successful mid-century Oregon artist and dedicated Episcopal priest best known for painting landscapes and reli- gious murals. His work has been exhibited in Portland, Denver, New York, Seattle, and San Francisco, and is represented in the permanent collections of the Portland and Seattle Art Museum. A professional artist before entering the priesthood, Geiser painted murals in the Red Cross Recreation Hall at the Base Hospital in Perigueux during World War I. Geiser resumed his career as a muralist when he moved to Portland to paint the eleven murals and the frescoes over the high altar in St. Mark’s Cathedral, a huge project that took seven years to complete, 1931–1938. In 1939 he attended the University of Oregon on a Carnegie Scholarship studying under Andrew Vincent and William Givler. He also took classes at the Portland Museum Art School.
