ly unhappy because each member of the family wants to do a different thing at a different time rather than doing each task, or planning each pleasure together. Christian boys and girls should be willing to gladly cooperate with their parents and with other children in the home in plan ning the work and play, so that the home will be happy at all times. LESSON STORY: On one of Jesus’ trips He entered Bethany, a small vil lage near Jerusalem, where three of His dearest friends lived: Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. While Jesus was in the home of His friends, the two sisters, Mary and Martha, were un happy because they could not agree upon the most important thing that should be done during Jesus’ visit. Martha was hurrying about the house caring for Jesus’ needs and probably cooking dinner for the family. Instead of helping Martha, Mary “sat at Jesus’ feet and heard his word.” Perhaps Martha was very tired, for she came to Jesus and said: “Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.” Jesus was firm, yet kind, in telling Martha that Mary had chosen to do the better thing; for there would not be many times when she could sit at His feet. He wanted Martha to know that to worship Him is the most important thing anyone can do. Perhaps Martha would have been happier if Mary had helped her to get the work done quickly so that both of them might listen to the words of the Lord Jesus. Many times our homes would be happier if each mem ber were willing to share the Work of the other members, that all might be able to enjoy play or rest together. Christian boys and girls should be especially eager to share the family tasks on Sunday, so that all the mem bers of the family may worship to gether in God’s house. LESSON FOR OCTOBER 28 Temperance Begins At Home LESSON MATERIAL: 2 Tim. 1:1-6: 3:14, 15; Tit. 2:1-4, 11, 12. GOLDEN TEXT: “ As for me, and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Josh. 24:15). Outline and Exposition I. T he P roper E xample (2 T im . 1:1-6) While this Epistle is a personal let ter from a father to a spiritual child, it carries Apostolic authority and is therefore pertinent tc every age. The words, “ according to the promise of life . . . in Christ Jesus” indicate that Christ is the source, sphere, susten-

Hope implies a recognition of, de sire for, and expectation of, future good; faith, a likeness unto, agree ment with, and satisfaction in, God. Love is greatest; w i t h o u t it, faith would fail, hope die, and God be unknown except in- a lofty, imper sonal way which would mean nothing to the lonely heart of man. Let us earnestly covet His undying love. Points and Problems 1. "Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word". (Luke 10: 39). If a home is to be truly Christian, there must be present both service and worship. The latter is the more im portant, but neither should be lacking. Mary was commended by her Lord because she had found proper balance for both in her life. Her sister, Martha, met the Master at the door and re ceived Him into the home, but she later on became so distracted by, and preoccupied with, the cares of enter tainment that she could no longer, give Him her -personal attention. It was quite different with Mary. She was riot indifferent to the duties con nected with showing hospitality to the Lord but she "also" possessed the disposition and found time to sit at Jesus’ feet and feed on His Word. 2. "But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part" (10:42). It should be noted that the Lord does not say that the matter of serving was wrong. It simply had been overdone on Martha’s part to the exclusion of time for meditation. She was so obsessed with the idea that the house must be in perfect order when Jesus came, that her spirit had be come unhappily disturbed and no time was left for fellowship with Him. Jesus cared more for her loving wor ship than for the most immaculate house and the most perfect service. 3. "Love suffereth long . . . endureth all things" (1 Cor. 13:4-7 R.V.). In these verses, we have love characterized. Only One perfectly exemplified this kind of love. Without violation of the text, the word “Christ” may be sub stituted for the word "love” through out this passage. Tor instance, how very true it is that “Christ suffereth long, and is kind.”
