FUTURE OF PAYROLL SURVEY REPORT 2020

Dealing with change has been something that payroll professionals have grappled with for centuries, and there is little suggestion that this is to change in the future. However, there are a number of topics that fill the guidance pages of gov.uk and we asked in the survey which topics should be simplified.

IR35 rules and off-payroll reforms was the most popular response, which collected 74% of answers, followed by holiday pay at 70% . Followed closely by salary sacrifice and National Minimum Wage (NMW), which commanded 56% and 35% respectively.

Responses have come from individuals from a wide variety of different service lines, and who work in a range of sectors which has resulted in us gathering a broad range of views from payroll professionals for how their future should look. Answers have been provided by both payroll professionals working and managing payroll completely in-house, from payroll service providers offering a service to clients and payroll professionals receiving a service from a payroll provider. The CIPP’s Advisory team have also experienced the change to our profession over the years which is reflected in the growing breadth and range of queries, not only on the subject of pay, reward and pensions but also on subjects that require a broad knowledge of the impact of employment law and intervention. Their experience together with the result of this year’s survey demonstrate the growing opportunity for development, not only for those of us already working in the profession, but also for young people set to embark on, working careers and who will, we believe, choose to develop a career in payroll.
