(18-23), believers are to allow the foundational truths of the gospel (“that which ye have heard from the beginning”) to abide in them. Such adherence results in fellowship (abiding) with the Son and the Fa ther, 24. The promise and present possession of those who abide, is eternal life, 25. In addition, adher ence to the truth will deliver believ ers from “them that seduce you”— those actively attempting to lead you astray, 26. Reliance upon the Holy Spirit, 27- 29. The Holy Spirit is the anointing (“unction,” v. 20). which believers receive at the time of conversion. He abides in the believer and teaches him “all things,” guiding into “all truth” (Jn. 16:13), 27. Abiding re sults in one’s having confidence and in not being ashamed at the coming of Christ, 28. The fruit of abiding is the practice of righteousness, which gives evidence of one’s rela tionship to and fellowship with the Righteous One, Christ, 29.
THE TEACHER Lord, who am I to teach the way To little children day by day. So prone myself to go astray ? I teach them knowledge, but I know How faint they flicker and how low The candles of my knowledge glow. I teach them power to will and do, That only now to learn anew M y own great weakness through and through. I teach them love for all mankind And all God's creatures, but I find M y love comes lagging far behind. Lord, if their guide I still must be, Oh, let the little children see Their teacher leaning hard on Thee. We may face situations beyond our ability but not beyond God's resources. * * * It is better to pay the price of obedience than the penalty of disobedience. ARE YOU READY? There is a man in yonder glory, I have loved for many years; He has cleared my guilty conscience, And has banished all my fears.
He is coming in a moment. In the twinkling of an eye, And no time will be allotted. Just to utter one goodby. No time to kiss the husband Or embrace the loving wife, If they are but united In the bonds of holy life.
Are you ready, Christian, ready For the shout, and trump, and voice? Will His coming make you tremble, Or cause you to rejoice? Are you walking, talking, with Him, Daily making Him your care? Do you live so close to heaven That a breath would waft you there? — Horatius Bonar
