Visitor centre adds displays and events for summer The St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre is now open for another summer season filled with activities and events. Equipped with a variety of video presentations and displays on hydroelectric, thermal and nuclear generation, safety around power facilities and the American eel, the Visitor Centre recounts the history of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Projects. The environmentally friendly building is fitted with many hands-on models and offers an educational outing for people of all ages. Visitors can chase a virtual eel up a ladder, spin a turbine to make electricity, or be an operator for a day and balance power production with the needs of other river users. The Visitor Centre’s strategic location, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, also allows visitors to enjoy magnificent views of the R.H. Saunders Generating Station. The new display “Indigenous Creations of the Natural World” features artefacts and archaeological findings that reflect Mohawk and Native American culture. The artefacts, all hand-made and created from natural materials found in the environment, include pottery, musical instruments, and lacrosse sticks. The exhibit is presented in partnership with the Native North American Travelling College. The Cornwall R.C.A.F Wing 424 organized their annual Canada Day fundraiser barbecue, on July 1. Second vice-president Woodie Boudreau manned the grill as several volunteers helped out during the event. All funds amassed will be donated to the local air cadets and used in a several different trips and activities. “They rely a lot on us,” explained president Don Ross. “We love to help them out. It teaches kids great lessons.” Pictured are Boudreau, Ross and first vice-president Pete Hood. — photo Francis Racine
