the U.S. Department of Labor, a U.S. Congressman from Michigan, a judge, and Kappa’s the 38th Laurel Wreath Laureate. The chapter hosted its inau- gural “Girl of the Year,” the chapter’s first formal scholarship, in 1944. It was awarded to Amelia Myers, who matric- ulated at Fisk University and Julliard School of Music. The program contin- ued through 1955, transitioning to other scholarship programs being established.
HISTORIC BID TO HOST CONCLAVE
In 1947, JAC made a bid to the Grand Chapter to host the 38th Grand Chapter Meeting in Jacksonville in December of 1948. Led by JAC, the seven Florida chapters jointly campaigned in the May 1947 issue of the Kappa Alpha Psi Journal to bring the 1948 Grand Chap- ter Meeting to Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to JAC, Alpha Xi, Tallahassee (FL) Alumni, Tampa (FL) Alumni, and Miami (FL) Alumni each submitted articles to the Journal showcasing their chapters and cities. The issue also featured prominent members of the chapter in the Jack- sonville community, including Chester Cowart, Cassius W. Jones, William L. Redmond, M.D., S. Spearing Campbell, M.D., William Johnson, John Darby, Sr., Maxie Wilson, Killis B. Bonner, William Mason Jimerson, James King, Raymond Miller, L.C. Parson, Ray- mond Stone, William R. Chapter Meeting in Kansas City, MO, the Jacksonville Alumni Chapter hosted the first annual meeting of the newly established province in a joint session with the Southeastern Prov- ince also called the “Little Conclave” October 18-21, 1951 on the campus of Edward Waters College. The chapter
would serve as host again for the 12th Southern Province Council in 1962 and the 25th Silver Anniversary in 1975.
