BOOKWORMS AND BASEBALL

It’s been especially fun watching this evolution as Jacob gets older. We try to strike up a balance of books he’s excited to read and books I’m excited to read to him. It ebbs and flows. Recently, though, we found a series of books he and I are both excited about. Jacob just discovered baseball as a sport, so when he found a set of baseball books at a book fair, it was love at first sight. Do you remember book fairs? Jacob’s school hosts two of them a year, and I always get suckered into buying a lot of books. During the spring book fair, I took Jacob early in the day, and somehow, later that day, we found ourselves back at the fair. I was adamant I wasn’t going to buy any more books, but this set caught Jacob’s eye. It was a series of baseball books, three of them, by baseball legend Derek Jeter. I thought, “Great, I’m going to buy books by a famous baseball player because I want my kid to read, and baseball is the way to get him excited about it.” But as we started reading them, I realized both Jacob and I thoroughly enjoyed the series. We looked forward to bedtime and reading the books together. On nights when we can’t read for one reason or another, I find myself feeling disappointed! Jeters’ books teach good tenants of both athletics and school. They don’t just talk about baseball; they also teach kids about being good student athletes and people, as well as being responsible on and off the field. Jeter also dives into good sportsmanship and talks about the fundamentals of baseball. The books are educational on both fronts and pretty well written. Jacob is the kind of kid who doesn’t mind reading the same books over again, and while I’m not going to bring it up just yet, if he wants to read the whole series again, I’m up for it. I’ve enjoyed them so much that when I heard there were more books in the series, they somehow made their way onto Jacob’s gift list. I must admit, I look forward to our nightly routine of bath time, reading, and bedtime. It’s nice that Jacob still wants me to be super involved, and I’m soaking up as much of it as I can.

Since Jacob was born, it’s been a tradition for Josh and I to read to him before bed. We’ve done this since he was itty bitty, and despite him being able to read on his own now, the tradition continues. Reading is an important part of all our lives. Jacob enjoys being read to, and Josh and I both enjoy reading. Until Jacob was about 5, Josh would read to him, then I would snuggle with him before bedtime. As he’s gotten older, he’s in a phase where everything is with Mom, and I’ve taken Josh’s spot as Designated Reader. If I’m not home, Josh gets to fill in, but for now, I’m the chosen one. Last year, we read the Harry Potter series. Josh started it off, but somewhere between book one and two, Jacob flip flopped and wanted me to read to him. I think Josh was a little disappointed, but of course, Josh and Jacob have their own rituals together. They talk about baseball, and Josh takes him to games. They build cars and do Cub Scouts. We each have our own special time together.

Worlds Within Pages BOOKS TO ENGAGE THE WHOLE FAMILY

Learning to read opens up a world of possibilities. When your child walks through the back of the wardrobe into Narnia with Lucy Pevensie or rides with Harry Potter on the train to Hogwarts, they connect to something beyond their own experiences. In the U.S., April 23 is World Book Day, and the date commemorates the deaths of legendary authors Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth of author Vladimir Nabokov. World Book Day is the perfect time to sit down with your family and let yourself be transported to new worlds. So, here are three great stories to help you take young readers on brand-new adventures.

simply to appreciate the colorful depictions of each animal. This book was written by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Petr Horácek.

For the Middle Schooler: ‘The Night Diary’ 12-year-old Nisha navigates her world after the partition of India creates the new country of Pakistan and her family is forced to leave their home. Her mother may be gone, but Nisha finds solace in writing nightly letters to her in her diary as she discovers what the future holds. Based on author Veera Hiranandani’s memories of her own family, this moving tale lets readers experience life through someone else’s eyes. For Teens: ‘Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World’ While some might not think of comics as proper reading, Penelope Bagieu’s graphic novel forces reconsideration. Her clever, colorful artwork and engaging narrative take the reader through the biographies of 30 women, from Bette Davis and Mae Jemison to lesser-known but equally intriguing ladies like Giorgina Reid. All in all, this book provides a great way to get kids excited about history in an entertaining form. Before filing suit, the insurance carrier offered $7,800 in pain and suffering for Maria’s permanent injury. After Maria filed suit, but before trial, the at-fault driver’s insurance carrier offered its full policy limit of $50,000. We secured an additional $5,000 for Maria’s underinsured motorist coverage. Maria ensured further protection for herself by purchasing underinsured motorist coverage. While it isn’t always a solution, additional coverage can help protect you in the event of a collision. Last year, a Maryland law went into effect to offer policy holders Enhanced Underinsured Motorist coverage, which allows stacking of your policy on top of the at-fault policy if you are in a collision with an underinsured driver. Because the car insurance realm can be confusing, our team is happy to speak with you about types of coverage and share our knowledge. You are welcome to reach out to us if you have questions. We are here for you. her injuries. Maria had significant bruising to both her legs and a permanent bruise on one leg.

For the Elementary Reader: ‘Song of the Wild: A First Book of Animals’

“Song of the Wild” makes a great read-aloud book for beginner readers because they can get lost in the beautiful artwork while you read the text. Written in prose and rhyming poems, this book showcases sprawling landscapes — savannahs, jungles, and oceans — and features the wildlife living there. It’s worth a read

FINDING CLOSURE AND COMPENSATION FOR OUR CLIENTS

When our clients are suffering in the aftermath of an auto collision, they search for resolution and closure. They don’t want to dwell on what happened, but they must seek legal help to pay medical bills and put their physical pain and suffering — and the emotional toll of what has happened — behind them.

This was the case for a client we represented after an auto collision. Maria* was in the front passenger seat of her coworker’s car in Montgomery County, Maryland. They were traveling together to a work seminar when the driver became distracted, lost control of the vehicle, and flipped the car. Maria found herself hanging upside down in the vehicle, held in by her seatbelt, as she waited for help. Emergency personnel quickly arrived at the scene and had to cut her out of the vehicle. They then took her to the emergency room, where she was treated for

Used vs. New Replacement Parts

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOUR VEHICLE NEEDS REPAIRS

After a collision, you took your vehicle to the shop, ready for it to be good as new. When you got your car back, however, you were dismayed to learn they fixed it with used parts.

While you’re waiting for the at-fault driver’s insurance to finalize their investigation into the collision, you can opt to have your own policy take care of vehicle repairs if you have collision coverage. This should expedite the process and help to minimize any subsequent damage. You should also know that using your collision coverage to minimize damage to your car is not an admission of guilt and shouldn’t negatively affect your insurance rating. After the at-fault driver’s insurance has completed their investigation, your insurance company will submit a request for reimbursement to the at-fault insurance company. Have questions following a collision? Reach out to us. Our bilingual office staff will be happy to talk to you about your options and set your up for success with your claim.

Following a collision, repair shops will often use used parts for replacements based on the standard set forth by most insurance companies. You might be surprised to find out that insurance companies aren’t necessarily required to replace damaged parts with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. Laws vary by state, but generally, insurance companies are responsible for returning your car to you following collision repairs in the condition it was prior to that collision, not in better condition. The law allows them to use non-OEM parts to cover repairs. If OEM parts are important to you, you can generally pay a betterment fee (usually the difference in cost between the new part and the used part) to have new OEM parts used. When shopping insurance carriers, you can also ask agents if their policies cover OEM replacement parts. Do note that for older car models, OEM parts are not always available, in which case aftermarket or used parts will be used.

Peanuts and Cracker Jacks

Baseball’s opening day has been an American holiday of sorts since the Cincinnati Red Stockings threw out the first major league pitch in 1869. To celebrate the start of the 150th season of professional baseball, here are three of the best opening days in baseball history . A New Beginning On April 15, 1947, an opening-day game changed the course of Major League Baseball. On this day, Jackie Robinson started for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African-American player to start for a major league baseball team. Robinson’s historic showing was lackluster, going 0-for-3 at the plate and making a solid showing on the infield at first base, but his mere presence in a Dodgers uniform had already broken history. Despite his nationally-recognized skills — Robinson was named MVP of the MLB farm team league in 1946 — the backlash that followed his rise to the pros, both from fans and teammates, was palpable. Still, as well-known sportscaster Howard Cosell said, “Suddenly, it was a new beginning.” Lou, Combs, and Babe — Oh My! Considered one of the best teams in baseball history, the 1927 New York Yankees started their historic run and 25th season by dismantling the Philadelphia Athletics with a score of 8–3. The slugfest was true to form for the 1927 Yankees, whose players

would go on to make up baseball’s famous “Murderers’ Row.” With sluggers like Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs, Babe Ruth, Mark Koenig, Bob Meusel, and Tony Lazzeri, it’s no wonder this team went on to win its fifth championship that year. The Hammer Ties Bambino For decades, no one could match George Herman Ruth. The Great Bambino’s all-time home run record seemed like an impossible feat of strength — that is, until Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron came along. On opening day, April 4, 1974, Aaron smashed his 714th homer, tying Babe Ruth for the most home runs ever hit and extending the Atlanta Braves’ shutout lead over the Cincinnati Reds. A few weeks later, Aaron surpassed Ruth’s record, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd.
