Abstract: Advertising restrictions are not only damaging to regulated operators but a punitive restriction on media who need the revenue streams to fulfil the role of a free press. On the other hand, media and social media networks can become crucial allies in the fight against illegal land based and online gaming and sports betting. What role do they all have and how can industry stakeholders reach out and collaborate for this purpose?
AS: In this session we are going to talk about advertising and social media, which for the last year has ended up as a key matter when we talk about gambling. Since the ban on advertising was approved back in 2018, in Italy, we have seen how neighboring jurisdictions have been approving step by step the restrictions. Spain, for example, in 2020, approved restrictions even more severe than Italy. And this trend has been spreading across Europe. In fact, not only Europe: we see how this is this trend is expanding to other areas as well for example, Ecuador, where the ban on advertising was approved in August, or Chile where it was announced just a few days ago. I believe we all agree that regulating advertising is necessary. Otherwise, experience has shown that unfortunately, there is bombardment and media saturation. However, experience also shows that the extreme rules that we are seeing across jurisdictions that are implementing restrictions on advertising, are generating a negative and worrying impact not only on operators but also on the main stakeholders. We talk about sports teams, football teams, especially and media spending in advertising is drastically decreasing. In Spain, for example, where the ban was approved, and has been in force now for two years, we are talking about a
