Conference proceedings, Zurich 2023

In Belgium, it’s sometimes the case that we are forced to work with somewhat older laws that really put things into classic categories, like casinos, you have arcade halls, which are like mini casinos, you have betting and then you have the lottery, which has its own whole separate jurisdiction. And all of those have different rules, which they try to transpose to online. But Jeremy, as you mentioned, sometimes the lines, they blur a bit, and these concepts blend into one another. And it may seem a bit arbitrary to have different rules for these different types of platforms, and then still require them to be separate. So it’s definitely a challenge. Sometimes the law needs to catch up as well. And we can only do so much through policy. We have to stay within the lines drawn by the law. GA: And I think we see a lot of them in the US too especially in jurisdictions that have had land based gaming for a long time. We’re finding now that some of those laws need to be updated. There is a big catch up process and a lot of the states that are writing the rules now for specifically online, I think are able to match what’s there now. But I think even 5-10 years down the road, there’s going to be another discussion there. If you’ve got to catch up, the technology is moving quickly. It’s a fast paced world. And in five years time, even these online regulations are going to need to catch up. The regulations aren’t staying ahead of the technology, they’re having to keep chasing. JK: Okay, I think we’re just about out of time. So I’m gonna ask the panelists one multiple choice question to round this out. All right. who benefits most from omnichannel? A, the player, B, the operator, C the B2B technology providers or D, the regulator? A B, C, D? JVD: I would say right now the operator, but when the laws develop more policies to get a bit better than it could be everyone. GA: I think that at the moment the operator stands to benefit the most from it, but there are benefits to all of them for sure. JK: All right. That’s a wrap. Thank you all.
