A Standard is stated in observable and measurable terms. It must be precise and clear to the therapist who is held accountable for accomplishing it. It must also be clear to the clients and the public (who assess the therapist's ability to accomplish a task as measured by the required standard). Standards include one or more of the following measures:

1. The REMT will interview horse owners and agents to obtain their objectives for the horse

and goals relative to equine massage therapy and will take direction from the

veterinarian.

2. The REMT will obtain and record the horse’s health background and history of use.

3. The REMT will determine the horse’s use, experience and condition by conducting

inquiries, observation and assessment or reassessment of suitability for massage therapy.

4. The REMT will explain the initial equine massage plan to the owner/agent and obtain the

veterinarian’s direction or advice.

5. The REMT will obtain the ow ner’s consent for the massage therapy program, consent for

release of massage therapy information and REMT’s observations, and consent for

release of information to the REMT.

6. The REMT will fully prepare the area and equipment for massage therapy.

7. The REMT will maintain a professional degree of personal hygiene.

8. The REMT will maintain a professional level of safety (general measures).

9. The REMT will adequately prepare the equine subject for treatment.

10. The REMT will implement methodology and techniques of massage therapy specified in

approved IFREMT curriculum.

11. The REMT will take all measures necessary to ensure humane care and prevention of

cruelty.

12. The REMT will maintain organized and accurate records, communication and compliance.
