The Age of Consent
No age restrictions in Ontario for consent for treatment, as long as the REMT deems the client capable.
Validity of Consent
In order for consent to be valid, the individual must be the owner of the horse or authorized agent and, in the opinion of the health practitioner, Mentally Capable to consent to treatment (in cases of mental incapacity the Act provides for an authorized individual to consent on their behalf).
Informed Choice
The practitioner must specify proposed treatment (including needs assessment, treatment plan, likely benefits and/or risks of treatment, alternative courses of action, any side effects, consequences of not having treatment).
All information must be delivered in a manner which is understandable by the patient/client. Consent must be given voluntarily and can be withdrawn at any time.
