A record of written consent (signature) is to be kept in the client's file.
*Specific to massage therapy: prior written consent is required for treatment of any part of the body.
Record of Consent
A record of written or verbal consent to treatment or authorized communications will be maintained in the client records.
Client's Right of Refusal
It is a client's right to refuse, modify, or terminate treatment at any time. When this request is made during the progress of treatment, the therapist will comply, regardless of prior consent.
Case Load
An Equine Massage Therapist reserves the right to regulate case load. An Equine Massage Therapist may refuse to administer massage or otherwise treat any horse if there is just and reasonable cause.
Professional Development
Equine Massage Therapists will maintain and enhance their practical and theoretical knowledge through professional development appropriate to the requirements of the individual's practice. Therapists will provide only those services for which they are qualified. Therapists will display or make available any certification obtained by attendance, training and successful completion of professional development courses when the subject matter is included in their practice.
Referral
Equine Massage Therapists will recognize the contribution and expertise of colleagues in equine massage therapy and other equine health disciplines as essential to excellent equine health care.
The therapist will consult with outside expertise when: • A client requires diagnosis and opinion beyond a therapist's capabilities of assessment; • A client's condition is beyond the scope of practice; • A combined health care team is required.
If referral to another equine health care provider is necessary, it will be done with the informed consent of the client.
