THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF REGISTERED EQUINE MASSAGE THERAPISTS’ CODE OF ETHICS
All Registered Members belonging to the International Federation of Registered Equine Massage Therapists conduct themselves in a manner consistent with a Professional Code of Ethics. The Code helps to ensure that all REMTs behave in a manner which is ethical, respectful and professional toward the equine community, the equine species, their colleagues, the Veterinary profession, and all members of society.
PRINCIPLE I - RESPECT FOR PERSONS AND ANIMALS
Meaning
To value the dignity and worth of all persons regardless of age, race, culture, creed, sexual identity, gender, ability, and/or health status. To value and respect the rights of domestic animals to be handled and cared for in a humane and considerate manner and to endeavour to enhance the comfort and well-being of every horse, regardless of the type, use or role the horse fulfils or performs for the client’s purposes.
Application
Client autonomy is demonstrated by:
1. Clearly identifying the horse owner or other client who is engaging the therapist and recognizing the role of the trainer, principal caregiver or other agent, and the veterinarian. Ensuring that clients are as fully informed as possible in the planning and implementation of their horse’s care. 2. Involving the client’s veterinarian in directing and supervising the horse’s health care, sharing information with the therapist and receiving reports on the equine massage services. Encouraging referral to an independent veterinarian where the client has no current association with a veterinarian.
3. Listening to and respecting a client’s values, opinions, needs and cultural beliefs.
4. Encouraging and being responsive to client’s choices to accept, augment, modify, refuse or terminate the therapeutic program. Recommending consultation with the veterinarian for such decisions.
5. Being informed about moral and legal rights of clients.
6. Advocating for and supporting clients in exercising their moral and legal rights.
