7. Safeguarding the client’s right to privacy and confidentiality by holding all information regarding the subject horse(s) in confidence unless otherwise required by law or Code.

PRINCIPLE II - RESPONSIBLE CARING

Meaning

Providing quality of service while maintaining sensitive, compassionate, and empathetic attention toward every subject horse and respecting the reasonable intentions and positive purposes of horse owner, agent and veterinarian.

Application

Responsible care of clients is demonstrated by:

1. Listening to and respecting the client’s value s, opinions, needs and cultural beliefs.

2. Promoting the client’s best interest and the well -being of the horse through the highest possible standard of professional practice.

3. Seeking assistance when conflicts arise between the value systems of the practitioners and the client. 4. Recognizing the role of the veterinarian and referring the client to veterinarians where the client has not already engaged one or deferring to other equine care providers when it is in the client’s and/or the horse’s best int erest to do so.

5. Being alert to and reporting, as required, any unethical or inhumane practice by any member of the care giving team associated with the horse.

6. Protecting the client’s privacy with respect to any information about the subject horse(s). 7. Collecting only that information which is relevant to the provision of equine massage therapy and necessary background for a safe massage program for the horse.

PRINCIPLE III - INTEGRITY IN RELATIONSHIPS

Meaning

To practise with integrity, honesty and diligence in our professional relationships with ourselves, our clients, the veterinary profession, our professional colleagues, the IFREMT and society in general.
