UNDERSTANDING BASIC BIOETHICAL CONCEPTS
In order to truly understand and appreciate "bioethics" as a tool or area of skill which can facilitate us in the process of making ethical decisions, we must first be familiar with the concepts and terminology that make up the language. In this chapter the concepts Ethics and Bioethics will be defined followed by an examination of the distinction between a bioethical issue and a bioethical dilemma. A case study approach will be used which applies these concepts to specific situations in clinical practice.
What is Ethics? A systemic and reflective approach to providing good reasons (sound arguments) for our moral beliefs and opinions.
Bioethics:
The application of the above approach in discerning and deciding what values ought to govern the practice of health care.
WHAT IS A BIOETHICAL ISSUE?
A situation which raises a value or moral question about the right/good, wrong/bad course of action.
