EXERCISE 2: EXAMPLE CASE STUDY - ETHICAL ISSUE

Frank has established a massage practice in an upscale medical building. He depends on physician referrals to obtain clients. One doctor in particular has referred many of his patients to Frank. One day while Frank is treating one of his referrals, he learns that the physician has a special arrangement with his patients, as long as the patient schedules an appointment for brief, but frequent visits, he continues to file reports to Workman's Compensation in favour of keeping the patient's claim open.

Should Frank report the fraud or ignore this reality, since the physician provides good referrals to Frank's practice.

What is a Bioethical Dilemma?

An ethical dilemma arises when we have a conflict of values, loyalties, obligations, in which a choice has both good and bad elements.

EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION EXAMPLE CASE STUDY - ETHICAL DILEMMA

Ivy is offered the opportunity to work in a successful and exclusive health spa. She is very grateful to her friend Susan for putting in a good word to the Executive Director of the spa. During Ivy's orientation to the facility, the Director (who is not a massage therapist) emphasizes proudly that, "we practice within the highest possible standards of practice and in strict adherence to all applicable laws and regulations." Susan is the Director's massage therapist, but one day, when Susan is sick, the Director schedules an appointment with Ivy. When Ivy refers to the client file, Ivy discovers that treatment records are extremely poorly kept. The Director was expecting a similar approach to treatment but unfortunately Susan did not record this information. Ivy recalls Susan stating that she did not put much time or energy into her record keeping because she was so busy at the spa and a lot of spa clients were only there to be pampered anyway. Should Ivy reveal the truth about the quality of the treatment records to the Director? Or, should she simply cover up for her friend and return the favour Susan did for her by recommending her for the job?
