February 2024 Oracle

I hope everyone is enjoying another wonderful winter season here at Outdoor Resort Palm Springs. What a great month January was with all our sporting events in full swing and the fun, outstanding entertainment brought to us from the Lifestyle Department. It ’ s good to have a Resort full of Owners and Renters so that we can share such great times together. Recently, I was at Singo, one of our favorite entertainment events, and DJ Johnny played a song that I have not heard in decades. The song was “ Be True to Your School ”, by the Beach Boys which was released in 1963. If you don ’ t remember the song, you can pull it up on YouTube. As I was listening to the song, it reminded me of our Resort. That may sound strange, but that was what I was reflecting on. Over the last couple of years, our Resort has been repeatedly attacked or discredited on social media. Our real estate agents tell me that this negativity is one of the reasons some sellers are leaving our Resort. It is important to realize that the world can see all these negative comments online, with the result that some new Renters and Owners are choosing to bypass our Resort. Please think before you post a negative comment, especially if it is an unfounded or unresearched statement. There are better ways to address a concern than just throwing it out on social media for the world to see. This affects all of us here at the resort. You may not realize it, but we have a regular annual turnover of approximately 10% of sellers (120 lots per year), as Owners age out and have health issues requiring them to be closer to home. For the sake of our property values, we need to continue to attract new Renters and future Owners here each season. Negative comments on social media only drive Renters and future Owners away. We need to continue to have lots selling within days as we do now and not with the challenges experienced 8 years ago. Yes, in 2016 we had over 250 lots for sale and few buyers. I purchased my lot from an owner who had been trying to sell his lot for 3 years. Plenty of things have changed here in our Resort since then, with more potential buyers than available lots. Our property values have at least doubled, and in some cases tripled since 2016. If you have an issue or concern, there are ways to address it without damaging ORPS, such as speaking with our general manager or a Board member in person or by email. Social media is not the place to air your negative thoughts, concerns, or rumors. Some of the things I have seen posted on social media are not only unbelievable or half - truths, but vicious and damaging to our Resort. Before posting or sharing, ask yourself, “ Is this a positive statement about ORPS? ” “ Is this fact or a rumor? ”, “ Do I know the whole story? ”, “ Have I taken all the appropriate steps to validate these comments and concerns? ” Please think before you post. So back to the Beach Boys song. Do not allow a few to denigrate our Resort - it ’ s not right, and it affects us all. Please be respectful and proud of your Resort and stand up and say, “ Stop it ”. ORPS is a wonderful place with so many fun things to do and enjoy. I ’ m proud to call our Resort my winter home and I know most of you feel the same. Thank you, John Boudin Board President

• Residents who can should transport themselves and others to the first aid treatment area for assistance with any medical needs. • Contact the ORPS Command Post for info and any other needs. How to call 911 at ORPS Give the address of the resort - 69411 Ramon Rd and ALWAYS USE a lot number. Your responders don ’ t know all the landmarks, like “ Back Nine Hole 6 Tee Box ”, but they for sure know every lot number. So add “ lot 1092” as you report this event to 911. Just find the closest lot number you can and you ’ ll be good.

In summary: •

Make a plan to manage the immediate hazards on your lot - know your power and propane shutoffs, and generator operations. • Determine a pre - arranged meeting place if your family is separated. • Think about an evacuation route, in the unlikely event it is safer outside the resort. • Keep enough fuel in vehicles to evacuate ORPS if required. • Keep full fresh water in your freshwater tanks. Disinfect it at least annually. • Maintain a dedicated and easily accessible emergency kit in your RV.. • Pack extra flashlights, batteries, chargers, a portable radio, duct tape, and even matches and candles in your emergency kit. • Keep on hand higher levels of food, meds, and pet food so you have about a seven day supply. • Have cash on hand - in ones and fives - in case the banking system is down. • Think about warm clothing and blankets - can you keep warm without power? • Local radio stations are: AM 920 1010 1140 FM 104.7 106.1 96.7 They will have the best local information. • Choose one out of state contact who can collect information on each member of your family, because sometimes out of state phone lines work best. • Use texting if phone calls don ’ t work; it uses much less bandwidth than voice or video calls. • Check your first aid supplies - add more if your supply is weak. • Check on the safety of ten (10) closest neighbors. Likewise, neighbors will do the same. • ORPS will have incident command and first aid

This season has been seven years since my wife Kathy, and I first found ORPS. We rented our first year, but within 10 days bought a lot and moved onto it the next year. Our summer home is in the Portland, Oregon area. We have two daughters and two grandchildren. My

After retiring, this mom of three grown children and four grandkids decided she couldn ’ t spend one more wet winter sitting in Oregon. After hearing about this place called ORPS, I rented a lot and headed to the desert. I immediately fell in love with the beauty of this resort and

ORPS experience includes being on the Pickleball committee and the Emergency Response Team, leading Pickleball skills and drills on a weekly basis, volunteering for Singo, volunteering as a golf marshal, and participating in the entertainment events of Big Star and Murder Mystery. I was raised in the Pasadena area and moved north when Oregon State University offered me a scholarship to play water polo. I returned to southern California after graduation and taught school in East LA. While I have a master ’ s degree in education, I left the teaching business after five years and entered the restaurant business. I owned my own restaurant, helped start several others, and eventually returned to Oregon to take a job with Sysco food service as a salesman, and eventually a District Manager. I have over 40 years of experience in managing people in the restaurant and food service business which has given me a variety of experiences, which I feel will help me as a board member. I have patience, integrity, fortitude, an aptitude for listening and respecting ideas, fiscal management experience, and all manner of experience that comes with managing people in a work environment. I am running for the board because I want to carry on the positive improvements of our prior Administration(s). In our short tenure here, we have experienced a huge increase in excellent entertainment, increased support, and encouragement to participate in social clubs, increased integrity in the running of all of our sports, stronger employee/owner relationships, and increased attention to fiscal responsibility. I do not have big ideas for change because I already think this is a fantastic resort and I want it to continue. I will listen to ideas about positive change, and make decisions for the good of the community, but I also want to discourage negativity that comes without ideas for solutions. No place is perfect but Outdoor Resort is as close to it as I have ever experienced. If you elect me, I will work for everyone and be a champion for this wonderful winter home.

the magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. There were so many amenities, activities and new sports to try. Before the season ended, I purchased my own lot. Every day I am grateful to be here with some of the kindest people I have ever known. I was raised in Portland, Oregon. I graduated from Oregon State University in Elementary Education. I became a member of KKG Sorority and held many leadership positions including house President. I spent 40 years as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist. During this time, I always found myself part of professional committees and holding leadership roles. I helped in the development and implementation of a district/w kindergarten program in one of Oregon's largest school districts, designed and opened a new school, chose curriculum, taught adults, and developed a school/w reading intervention program, to name a few. I am currently a founder/president of the CHS Alumni Foundation which gives financial support to students who want to participate in co - curricular activities but can ’ t afford the cost. I am a member of my HOA. I have always believed you have to do the hard work to get the best results. I ’ m a problem solver, quick to see the big picture, team player, good listener and I ’ m not afraid to have the hard conversations. I think a sense of humor can go a long way and giving grace to others is essential. I look forward to hearing what is important to you, the residents of ORPS. I ’ m currently on the Lifestyles committee and secretary of Safety and Security. If I am elected to the board, I will work hard for you as we continue to make the resort the best it can be. I ’ m committed to open communication as we continue to build a fiscally responsible resort that provides ongoing facility maintenance and improvements. I ’ ll continue to look for ways to improve our safety. I ’ ll make sure we have current systems that are effective and make sense. And above all, I ’ ll strive to keep ORPS a fun and happy place to be.

My wife, Debbie, and I visited ORPS in October 2021 for a property tour. We quickly realized we had found our winter home away from home. The well - manicured grounds, amenities, activities, and RV lifestyle made ORPS the place for us. We purchased our lot and moved

Linda and I first came to ORPS in January 2022 as renters. In March of 2022 we purchased our lot and became full owner members of this great resort. We are fortunate to live only an hour and a half away in Lake Arrowhead. We were so

impressed with all of ORPS but particularly the people who reside full and part time at the resort. Linda and I are active golfers and Linda is a pickleballer her new love. Linda and I are mostly retired, she is a CPA with a few clients remaining and I still hold my California Auto Dealer license. As to my qualifications to be a member of the Board of Directors of our resort, I am currently a board member and the Secretary of Lake Arrowhead Country Club, a private equity country club. I have served on the Board of Directors for the last five years and I am in my final year as a director, we have term limits at the club. I have been the chairman of the Golf committee, chairman of the Communications committee, chairman of the Rules and the Bylaws committee and chairman of the Greens committee. Most of my working career I have been self - employed in the furniture business with three retail stores and many headaches, owner of an auto rental agency with five locations with many more headaches and the Information Technology business with only myself to blame. As a business owner the buck always stops with the owner. Dealing with Local, State and the Federal Government is at best a challenge for anyone operating any kind of business or private entity with employees. Therefore, after sixty years of experience in business I have seen most everything and gained a great amount of knowledge. It has served me well, though it has not always been easy. I would be a definite asset to the Board of Directors with no agenda except for what is best for owners, employees and vendors. I ask for your vote to be a member of the Board of Directors of Outdoor Resort Palm Springs.

Debbie and I have been married for 42 years and have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren who also love their many visits to ORPS. I have served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer for the past year and volunteered as a part of the Wednesday burger night crew. I am a resort ambassador and have recently assumed leadership responsibility for the Ambassador program at ORPS. My 45 - year career in education includes 23 years in senior administration serving as Superintendent/CEO and Deputy Superintendent of school divisions in Newfoundland and Alberta. Since retiring, I have joined the faculty of City University of Seattle teaching the Masters of Leadership program to future leaders in Western Canada. My role as a senior leader in the education system included working closely with our elected board of trustees. I understand and appreciate the differences in the roles of board members and management. I have extensive experience as a board member including this past year as an ORPS Board member and have served on several boards in education, mental health, golf and policing. My goal as a board member is to work collaboratively with my board colleagues and to continue the work I started this year in providing financial oversight as the board treasurer. Our reputation as a lifestyle community has to continue to grow with enhancements to existing amenities and the activities we offer all owners and renters while being mindful of owners' wishes and the budget. The popularity of ORPS is a result of the active lifestyle that we as owners can enjoy. Over the years great strides have been made in building a community that we are all proud to call home. A vote for me will continue that positive growth in our community and lifestyle opportunities.

So be sure to let the Starter Shack know if you ’ ve made a HIO because only those who make a HIO can enter the HIO Tournament in March.

February is still a season of renewed purpose and mo- tivation. As the new year offers a new start, many find themselves reflecting on their lifestyles, fueled with the ambition to adopt healthier, more balanced lives ….. For some, this means setting health goals, such as losing weight, following a healthier diet, and starting an exercise routine. However, more often than not, the health and wellness resolutions chosen are highly restrictive and unsustainable, leading most people to break their resolutions within a few weeks. This is why many people make the same resolutions year after year. To break that cycle, it ’ s important to make resolutions that can not only improve health but also be followed for life. Make easy resolutions to follow. Just to name a few …. • Eat more vegetables • Go to bed earlier • Create a doable cleaning schedule • Spend more time with family • Cook a new healthy recipe weekly • Start a new workout routine • Plan a new vacation • Start volunteering • Clean out your wardrobe • Drink more water • Try something new each month These are just a few ideas. Now come up with your own. Make it a happy and successful New Year! Gym notes: It ’ s flu season, PLEASE, clean your equipment after each use!!! I shouldn ’ t have to remind people when I am in there. There are several flu bugs in the resort, with lots of people sick.

Outdoor Resorts has been blessed to have its own nondenominational Chapel Community with a long history and presence since the property was created. Chapel started in 1986 under a resort sanctioned Charter and board with Bill Gwinn as a resident Chaplin. Bill was here for 18 years until his retirement when his nephew Jim Gwinn took over 19 years ago. They have both served us very well and now we face Jim ’ s retirement and a new path for our Chapel. Jim is known by many and often times make hospital and home visits for those in need. We have enjoyed attendance of up to 400 ORPS residents with attendance dropping during Covid and now on the rise again. We invite all to attend as we are nondenominational. Weekly Speakers and performers have come from all over the US and many are well known and respected leaders. This year ’ s charity raffle quilts:

We have many interesting sewers in the sewing room and thought it would be fun to spotlight one each month. Our first quilter to spotlight is Carol Allen, our president. Carol lives in Draper, Utah, and has been coming to ORPS with her husband Tad since 2014, purchasing their lot in 2018. Carol has been sewing for most of her life but didn ’ t start quilting until 1999 when her 5 children became more independent, giving her more time to sew. One of Carol ’ s first goals was to make a quilt for each of her 24 immediate family including her 12 grandchildren, which she accomplished. Thanks for all your hard work in the Club Carol! On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, ORPS Quilters and Sewers will be hosting our Annual Quilt Show in the ES Ballroom. We invite all to come by between 10 AM and 2 PM to see the amazing things created by our group. Besides the works on display, there will be items for sale. Come vote for your favorites and stop for a complimentary cup of coffee and a cookie. Each year we create beautiful quilts to be raffled off at the Ladies Charity Luncheon held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Tickets go on sale at the Lifestyle Office on Friday, February 2. The ORPS Quilting and Sewing group has adopted the Shelter From The Storm, the Coachella Valley ’ s only domestic violence shelter, as a focused charity. Your support by purchasing raffle tickets helps us purchase the materials needed to make these quilts. Due to the generosity of the ORPS community, we were able to send the Shelter From The Storm approximately $10,000 last season. Way to go ORPS!

Watch for a pop - up sales table at ORPS events where the quilts will be displayed, and tickets will be sold. Ticket prices are $5 each or five (5) for $20. Quilts may also be viewed and tickets purchased in the sewing room when members are present from 8am to 5pm Monday through Sunday.

Memorial Corner: It is with great sadness that last November Carol Odland passed away after a short illness. She worked in the mailroom for 26 years, 15 as supervisor. Her family including her daughter, grandson, and brother were at her bedside. Her get together group in the resort, including her good friend Lupe, will miss her dearly.
