Summer is almost over, but my family has one last vacation planned. We will be visiting Kate’s family in Hamilton, Montana. Last year, Kate’s sister and brother-in-law rented a cabin at Flathead Lake and invited us to stay with them. We spent most of our time on the lake, having fun on the boat and participating in a variety of water sports. The kids were beaming as they bounced along on the boat, and the adults enjoyed themselves as their everyday stresses melted away. When we visit Kate’s sister, Rylan and Rowan have a chance to bond with their cousins. The kids love playing with family their own age, and we think it’s important for them to develop a close relationship with their cousins. I’m not entirely sure what our Montana adventure will consist of this year. I like to joke that I am just the driver and my job is to make sure everyone makes it to their destination safely, but Kate is the one in charge of the detailed plans. No matter what we do, I know that we plan on spending quality time with all of the family. Last year, the Roaring Lion Fire swept through a vast section of the Hamilton area, and Kate’s parents' house was destroyed. Thankfully, everyone was okay, but Kate’s parents have since moved, and I am certain they are eager to show us their new house. We will probably spend a few days at the house, which will give Kate’s parents plenty of time to love on Rylan and Rowan. After coming home from our vacation, we'll be busy getting ready for fall and the start of a new school year. I can’t believe Rylan will be starting first grade; he’s anxiously awaiting the first day of class. I hope he never loses his enthusiasm for education. At the end of last school year, Rylan earned an award for student of the month, which he won for trying his best and being kind to his peers. I was able to attend the ceremony and surprise Rylan by showing up “ At the end of last school year, Rylan earned an award for student of the month, which he won for trying his best and being kind to his peers.”

unannounced. He was thrilled to see me, and we got to hang out and share some cookies before he returned to class.

Fall sports are going to pick up soon, and Rylan seems quite invested in soccer and swimming at the moment. Kate and I decided a long time ago that we are going to let our kids explore whatever activities interest them, and we will never force them to participate in a sport unless it’s what they want. Right now, that means soccer and swimming, but Rylan may show interest in something new next week. We look forward to seeing what he sticks with! We are still taking suggestions for our outdoor program! If there are any cool activities you would be interested in, let us know by calling 503-427-0118 or by leaving a comment on our Facebook page at When you suggest an activity, we’ll put your name in a drawing to win a $50 gift card.
