A MORE EFFICIENT CAR: THE POWER OF MAGNETS
In October of 1882, the “father of the modern rocket propulsion,” Robert Goddard, was born. Despite his renown today, Goddard was mocked for his dream of getting a vehicle into space. However, he did manage to launch the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket from a Massachusetts farm in 1926. Goddard’s experience of this incredible idea reminds me of a few ideas I had as a kid, that were essentially mocked as well. Ever since I was young, I’ve enjoyed thinking about how things could become more efficient, especially when it came to cars. I’ve been in love with cars since I first saw one. At 3 years old, I got into my parents’ car, put it into neutral, and rolled 3 feet backward before my dad hopped in and stopped me. That passion never went away. In sixth grade, I drafted different ways (and means) to create a better and more efficient vehicle than the ones we had back then. At the time, people talked about a future possibly filled with flying cars — like what they showed on “The Jetsons,” but I never thought it was practical. We already had air traffic in the form of planes and, more specifically, helicopters. If we had helicopters flying all over, the skies would be congested, and we’d eventually have to implement lanes in the sky. It was then that I started to try designing a car that would be far more efficient. These ideas all started after a lesson in electricity and magnets in my sixth-grade science class. We learned a little about both, but it was the magnets that captured my attention. I was fascinated with the topic and fell in love with magnets and the countless possibilities they presented. I remember thinking they could help us so much one day, and that was when I started to think about cars. If we created roads made of metal (or at least with metal in them) and our cars were magnetic, they could move even quicker. If the magnets used for our vehicles were the type that repelled, rather
than attracted and stuck together, the cars would have no rolling resistance! This would therefore increase our vehicle efficiency and make everything look a little better, too. While I think it’s still a great idea, I never figured out how vehicles would “stop” in that design. Another design I thought about was one that involved the car specifically. At some point during that magnet and electricity lesson, I remember thinking that my mom’s car was designed wrong because it had to shift. If the engine could generate an electrical charge at its most efficient RPM, and there were electric motors at the wheels, the car would be much more efficient. My teacher told me I was wasting my time and that those ideas would never work. Those words were a bit disheartening, especially for someone so young. But I never forgot that idea, and I wasn’t the only one! While I may not have proven anyone wrong, Elon Musk certainly did. Although I never made my own car, one of my biggest goals in the next few years is to buy a Tesla. I think the much better design of the car matches what I thought of as a kid. Someone finally packed it all up and made it. And the thing even stops, too!

In times of stress, we can improve our mental health by finding the silver linings in life to help us through each day. While the pandemic is certainly a stressful time, many people have used it as a chance to finish household projects, reinvigorate an old hobby, or deep-clean their living space. Being stuck at home for days, weeks, or even months at a time, gives us all an opportunity to look around the house and think, “When was the last time I cleaned that?” By thinking about what may or may not have been cleaned since the day you bought it, and what you can do to brighten things up at home, it’s not surprising that people are eager to clean their comforters, sheets, and even their pillows. Luckily, our team at Janet Davis Cleaners has several systems in place to clean these items and to help give everyone that fresh feel and smell they’re looking for. One of our coolest systems is for anyone who brings in their feather pillows. Some people might not realize it’s possible to thoroughly clean their feather pillows, but it’s very possible! Our system allows us to take the feathers out of the pillow, clean the feathers separately, then put them into a brand-new casing. We also have machines that are big enough to wash and dry nonfeather pillows. These machines remove all the moisture from the pillows so they don’t smell later. When you're sitting at home with freshly laundered sheets, couch coverings, clothes, and feather pillows after a visit with us, it might feel like you can’t do anything else. But you can! If you know anyone who is doing a deep-clean of their house, let them know that we can help them out, too.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE DOING ABOUT WEDDINGS DURING THE PANDEMIC?
Couples in Orange County, California , married throughout the spring in front of ticket booths at the Honda Center. Couples stood in front of these booths while their vows were exchanged and given through the two- way radio while family and friends watched through Zoom calls or Facebook Live.
As English poet George Gordon Byron once wrote, “Love will find a way through paths where wolves fear to prey.” Nothing relates more closely to the quote than the many couples who are trying to get married right now. These individuals won’t let anything stop their big day, not even a pandemic. By staying safe and following social distancing guidelines, they’re still planning to celebrate this wonderful life event. Our team at Janet Davis understands how important wedding days are for people, and we’re ready to do whatever we can to ensure this day is special for you. These past few months, our teams have been busy cleaning many wedding gowns for future brides, so we’ve heard some inspiring stories about how these couples were planning to celebrate their weddings. Some people told us they were going to have their regular wedding, but only with themselves, close family, and their wedding party. Others are still using their venues with a limited capacity, while many others are holding their ceremonies at their homes. We’ve even seen and heard about some weddings taking place over Zoom, where the family and friends could participate through the livestream. Here are some other examples of people across the world celebrating their weddings, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Ein Hemed National Park, Israel , Roni Ben-Ari and Yontan Meushar married in the planned venue with very few people attending. An Indonesian couple, Mohamad Nurjaman and Ugi Lestari Widya, held their wedding just outside Jakarta, Indonesia . Once their ceremony was over, they opened up a video conference to speak with their family and friends. If you're still planning on holding your wedding, Janet Davis can help you look amazing in a freshly cleaned wedding gown. Head over to our location or give us a call at 248-543-0340.

4 Tips for Buying New Outdoor Gear!
TIPS FOR BUYING NEW OUTDOOR GEAR! FALL ANDWINTER SPORTS ARE ON THE HORIZON
When was the last time you bought new ski pants or hiking boots? Now that you’re thinking about it, you might be realizing it’s been many years since you updated your most used athletic gear, which might explain why you’ve been colder than usual on the ski hill or why your feet ache after a short hike. If this sounds familiar, it might be time to consider investing in new gear. It can be very expensive, but you’re in luck — the holidays are just around the corner, which means so are the sales! Before you drop cash on new gear, sort through your current inventory and decide what to keep, sell, and toss. This might be hard and you may be tempted to skip it, but making these decisions can help you save money. If you have equipment or athletic wear that’s still in
good condition but you no longer need, find a consignment shop where you can sell or trade it. After all, your gear might be perfect for someone else and still give you some money to get a great upgrade for yourself. As you sort through your gear, see if any equipment is damaged and requires repair or replacement. Test flashlights and headlamps to make sure they work and inspect gear that’s been stored and forgotten, like backpacks and tents, that you might not notice the wear and tear on while out in the wild. You don’t want any equipment to malfunction when you’re in the middle of an excursion.
Decide what outdoor activities you want to do in the upcoming months and in the next year. Adjust your inventory to your new needs and research which brands have the best ratings and reviews. Then, find which retailers tend to have the best prices. Shopping smart takes a little bit of preparation, but it can save you hundreds of dollars and lots of stress during those busy holiday weeks. So, dig through your closet or garage, take note of your current gear, and prepare to find some awesome deals for the whole family on new gear for the coming year.
Now that you know what gear you want to replace, it is time for the fun part.
