KEY QUOTE “The Truth is that the Arctic is a

national territory that is too large to be secured by conventional military means, and in fact, the cost of each surveillance and military patrol is increasingly prohibitive” 52

With Justin Trudeau’s victory in the 2015 election, Canada is likely to take a new line in the Arctic. However, even with a change in government, Canada in the Arctic will always be connected to sovereignty and economic development. 368 Unlike the USA, Canada sees itself as an Arctic state, and has a great attachment to the Arctic. Therefore, Canadian policy in the Arctic is likely to be focused on protecting Canadian sovereign rights in the region at all times. Although there are currently no direct military threats in the region to Canada (like Russia and the USA), Canada needs to impose sovereignty on its areas to provide effective security to the region. 369 368 Heather N.
