ORGANIC DATES
Description
The date fruit is naturally sweet and contains a high content of natural sugar such as fructose and sucrose. There is no added sugar in our dates. Khidri, Madjool, Kholas, Segai and Ajwa only contain fructose (fruit sugar). This sugar has a lower glycaemic value, which has a lower impact on blood sugar and keeps the blood sugar balanced. Wanan and Sokari contain both fructose and sucrose (common sugar), which gives them a higher sugar content. To preserve dates all year round without freezing or cold storing, dates are pressed and left to soften in the juices in the pressing process. Bateel offers some of our dates in pressed formats.
Types
Madjool :
• Thick outer skin reddish brown to mahogany colour . Large elongated shape with a pointed end. It is the world’s most popular variety, also called the ‘California date’. The flesh is amber -coloured with a caramel-like flavour and hints of vanilla. Recognised widely by the ‘wrinkly’ skin. Kholas : • Dark to golden brown with smooth, semi-translucent skin. Delicate flesh with a toffee flavour but not overly sweet. This date is most commonly taken with Arabic coffee. Wanan : • Dark, wrinkled skin with soft, mildly sweet flesh. It is long and cone-shaped with a similar flavour to the Khidri though a bit sweeter and meting faster in one’s mouth. This is Bateel’s signature date! – a sign of our innovation. Segai : • Originating in KSA, it has a multi-hued appearance with a light beige coloured rim and a saffron to dark orange base colour. It is medium sized, oblong in shape. The flavour is sweet like brown sugar at the rim with a juicy, soft and mildly sweet base and a yellow crispy band where the sugar has crystallised. Khidri : • Originating in Egypt, it is a large date, with dark maroon-red skin and cylindrical and elongated shape with wrinkled, flaky skin. It has a sweet, chewy flesh, suggestive of raisins and caramel, with a deep aftertaste. It is the most popular date and a Bateel Bestseller! Sokari : • Also called the ‘Royal’ date, it is a cone -shaped date with creases in the skin of a yellow to dark gold skin colour. It comes in soft and hard varieties and its crystallised sugars give a pleasantly crisp bite and caramel like flavour. Sokari comes from the word, “ sukar ” in Arabic. Ajwa : • Cultivated at Madinah in limited quantities and known as the ‘holy’ date, it is small in size with soft, brown -black skin, fine wrinkled lines and a delightful sugary taste. Reminiscent of prunes, it has a soft and mildly sweet; fruity flavour. Most popular among Muslims.
