Walking Tour: Franz Kafka at the Morgan Library and Museum Running November 22, 2024 through April 13, 2025, the Morgan Library and Museum's exhibit on Franz Kafka presents an extraordinary collection relating to this immensely influential author who penned a relatively small body of work, dying of tuberculosis in 1924 at the age of forty. Highlights include the original manuscript of The Metamorphosis , manuscripts of Amerika and The Castle , letters and postcards to his sister Ottla, personal diaries where he also composed fiction such as his short story, "The Judgment," notebooks used while studying Hebrew, and family photographs. In addition to the biographical materials, the display includes items relating to his posthumous fame, including Andy Warhol's portrait of Kafka that appeared in the 1980 series Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century . HELEN LEE is an independent art educator, conducting research and crafting personal, customizable, in-person and virtual gallery experiences for adults and children at several museums. She studied art history as an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with areas of concentration in Asian Art and Modern Art. Belle da Costa Greene at the Morgan Library & Museum In celebration of its 100th anniversary with a seminal exhibit running October 25, 2024 through May 4, 2025, the Morgan Library & Museum is illuminating the life and career of Belle da Costa Greene, the library’s first director, a woman of color who passed as Caucasian. Through extraordinary objects, from medieval manuscripts and rare printed books to archival records and portraits, the exhibition demonstrates the confidence and savvy Greene brought to her roles as librarian, scholar, curator, and cultural executive, and honors her enduring legacy. Learn the background and history with the aid of vintage images to make the most of your visit. Suggested reading: An Illuminated Life: Bella da Costa Greene’s Journey from Prejudice to Privilege (2007) by Heidi Ardizzone and The Personal Librarian (2021) by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray.
