Cynical about the activists' idealism in this region of old farms and prehistoric caves and confident of her surveillance strategy, she is also seduced by the charismatic leader of this group. Intermezzo (2024) by Sally Rooney Named by the New York Times as a notable book of 2024, Rooney’s fourth novel focuses on the relationship between two brothers who are grieving their father’s death. Separated by age and periods of estrangement, Peter is a 32-year-old barrister with more than one love interest and Ivan is a 22-year-old chess prodigy who falls for an older woman. This character study into its two protagonists explores themes of family dynamics while also delivering Rooney’s trademark political commentary on wage labor, Dublin’s housing crisis, religion, and existentialism. Caucasia (1999) by Danzy Senna Birdie and Cole are the daughters of a black father and a white mother, intellectuals and activists in the Civil Rights Movement in 1970s Boston. After their parents’ marriage collapses, their father and his new girlfriend take off with Cole while Birdie, who is often mistaken for white, is left to drift across the country with their mother. Birdie is haunted by the loss of her sister and runs away on a desperate search for the Black family that left her behind.
