Ketz AK, Anders J, Orina J, Garner B, Hull M, Koreerat N, Sorensen J, Turner C, Johnson J. Photobiomodulation Therapy Plus Usual Care Is Better than Usual Care Alone for Plantar Fasciitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Int J Sports Phys Ther. 2024 Jan 2;19(1):1438-1453.
Prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial (level II). 114 adults between 18-65 years of age with symptoms of PF for at least three months were randomly assigned to one of three groups: • Usual care (6 weeks), no PBMT • Usual care (6 weeks) plus 9 doses of PBMT with 25W output power over 3 weeks, 10J/cm² • Usual care (6 weeks) plus 9 doses of PBMT with 10W output power over 3 weeks, 10J/cm² Outcomes: • Pain (with Defense and Veterans Pain Rating Scale) • Function (by Foot and Ankle Ability Measure) Results • The effect on pain relief and sports function was statistically higher in the pooled PBMT group than in the usual care group at end of treatment (3 wks). • The effect on pain was maintained at 6m follow-up. • There was no statistical difference between 10W and 25W. • 25W has the advantage of 2.5 times shorter treatment time.
KEY MESSAGE High power laser treatment added to usual care resulted in significant improvement of pain compared to usual care only and the improvement was maintained up to 6-months follow-up.
