Seen as the most practical way of enhancing the cruise experience, creative tech is being adopted aboard a raft of new ships at warp speed. Princess Medallion Class holidays are here.
Princess Cruises is unquestionably at the forefront of innovation with the OceanMedallion. Little bigger than a 10p piece, the medallion is a fully automated wearable device and has been designed to deliver an entirely new level of service and create a holiday that is more simple, effortless and personalised. The infrastructure includes 72 miles of cable, 4,000 sensors, 650 readers, 500 edge computing devices and more than 4,000 interactive portals. Inside this ingenious bit of kit microelectronics power two microscopic antennas, one for near-field communication (NFC) and one for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The readers and sensors across the ship interact with guests’ medallions. Plus guests can enjoy the freedom to make reservations in on board dining rooms and specialty restaurants at times they prefer and with whom they wish to dine with the Dine My Way feature. The wearable device offers a host of benefits from the moment passengers arrive at the terminal with passports uploaded to their profile enabling a streamlined check-in process. Once on board, touchless stateroom entry ensures there’s no need to swipe or insert cards into the door handle to unlock the stateroom - as a guest approaches their stateroom the door automatically unlocks. During the cruise guests have the ability to order drinks, food and retail items such as suntan lotion and have them delivered directly anywhere on board, including to their stateroom. Another use of this nifty device is the family and friends locator, allowing passengers to easily locate and chat with friends and family on board. In addition, the OceanCompass feature guides
passengers throughout their journey, providing directional information so they can seamlessly navigate to their next point of interest. To make the cruise even more rewarding, JourneyView is an interactive timeline that lets guests scroll through all of the events available on board during their voyage and bookmark activities they’re interested in.
Other facets and benefits of the device include: touchless easy payment for merchandise, drinks, shore excursions and other on board services; interactive games that can be played on portals across the vessel and the top deck ‘Movies Under
The Stars’ screen, including trivia challenges and a ship-wide digital scavenger hunt. There’s a selection of casino games available via guests’ smart devices and select portals with parental controls. In addition, MedallionNet – claimed to be the fastest Wi-Fi at sea - allows guests to stay connected anywhere on board including staterooms. It also allows them to share holiday experiences with friends and family back home; stream TV shows, films and sports events; plus make voice and video calls. Princess Cruises has announced that upon approval to return to service in 2021 its global fleet will feature the MedallionClass Experience, offering a number of new features that leverage touchless technologies and significantly enhance and personalise the guest experience, as well as support new health protocols.
