TO MY MOM Thank You for Everything You’ve Done for Me

I’m fortunate to have such an amazing mother who

mother was always there with a helping hand, and she would do anything in her power to assist me whenever she could.

has always supported me. My mother was there

The trait of giving to and providing for me never ended. She’s always there and wants to know what’s going on in my life. She helped me financially and drove up to campus if I needed help with something during college. When I was buying a new car, she was there to provide insight and information that she thought would help me. When I bought a house, she was there to help me organize and gave me some pointers that helped me as I moved forward. My mother is the most caring, loving, and kind person. It’s nice to know that I can always lean on her and get her advice when I need it. One of the things I learned from my mother that helps in my professional life is how to be clean and organized. My mom is such a neat and organized person. She organizes the closets, drawers, and furniture all of the time. Today, her house is in great shape, and every time I go over, it’s nice and clean. The habit of being organized is something that I use on a daily basis here at Petersen Pet Hospital. I love having our office clean and put together. When I’m doing surgery, I have a certain way of performing surgeries that help me stay organized and ensure that I don’t miss anything. When I go to my office, everything has its own place. I feel like I can work better and concentrate efficiently when my area is nice and clean. I have heard tons of great things about how clean and organized our business is from our clients and also newer people on our staff. It makes me happy to know that my office provides them with a safe and comfortable space. It’s comforting knowing that I came from a loving household and have such a caring mother. None of this would’ve been possible without my mom. I wouldn’t be the man I am today if it wasn’t for her.

for me during every part of my life, and I will always be grateful for her and how she helped me transform into the man I am today. So, in honor of Mother’s Day, I wanted to take the time and talk about my amazing mother, Shar Petersen. While I was growing up, my mother used to spoil me all the time, and she still spoils me to this day — even though I’m 51 years old! I was the

youngest of three kids, and I was the only son. So you could say

I was and always will be my mom’s little boy. One of the memories with my mom that stick out to me the most was when I was younger, my mom would dress me, and she always made sure that I looked proper and put together. I thank her for that to this day

because if it wasn’t for her, I’m not sure if I would’ve been able to figure out what to wear as I got older. She helped me develop an eye for clothes and what would match well together. She also fixed my hair sometimes when I was younger if it were a mess. I remember how she used to lick the palm of her hand and pat down the strands of hair on my head. As I got older and she tried to do this, I would say, “Mom, stop! I can do it.” Every time I think about that, it always makes me laugh. My

I love you, Mom. Happy Mother’s Day!

Kyla is a native Cedar Rapidian who worked in the human optometric field for many years before deciding on a career change to work with animals. She went back to school at Kirkwood in 2013 and graduated from the veterinary technician program in 2015. She grew up with many critters including fish, dogs, hermit crabs, horses, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, frogs, turtles, snakes, and even tarantulas. She has always had a deep respect and love for all creatures great and small. Kyla and her husband, Matt, are avid travelers and have visited nearly all 50 states, numerous countries and six out of seven continents. They share their home with two senior dogs: Izzy, a 15-year-old Maltese/Pomeranian mix, and Gidget, a 14-year-old Papillon/Jack Russell terrier mix. Leo Is On the Mend

Leo is a very sweet 4-year-old lab mix. In January, he presented for a routine annual wellness exam with Dr. Green and appeared to be a very healthy and happy boy on the outside. Unfortunately, Leo’s annual heartworm test had returned positive. After running an additional blood test to confirm a positive result, Dr. Green and Leo’s owners were eager to get him started on a heartworm treatment protocol to try to save Leo from this serious and potentially fatal disease. After testing positive, Dr. Green and her team re-evaluated Leo and performed baseline bloodwork and chest X-rays to determine if the heartworms had affected his lungs. His X-rays showed some mild changes in his lungs likely correlated with his heartworm disease, but we were able to proceed with treatment since he was not experiencing clinical signs. He was also started on an antibiotic to eliminate a type of bacteria calledWohlbachia, which is commonly transmitted with the heartworms. After we confirmed that Leo was otherwise healthy, Dr. Green and her team proceeded with heartworm treatment. Leo was hospitalized overnight and received IV fluids and two injections of a medication to kill the heartworms. Leo was also started on a course of steroids to help with inflammation associated with the heartworms dying. Although Leo has a long road full of rest and relaxation, his owners are dedicated to making sure their sweet boy is healthy inside and out. Heartworm disease is caused by a bloodborne parasite that can be passed to our pets from mosquito bites. The parasite can form adult worms in a dog’s heart and pulmonary vessels causing cough, shortness of breath, weakness, exercise intolerance, and in severe cases, or if left untreated, can cause congestive heart failure. Thankfully, heartworm disease is preventable by using a reputable heartworm preventative regularly year-round. Leo is doing well at home after his injections and his owners have started him on once monthly heartworm prevention to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Dr. Green is looking forward to seeing Leo and his owners in six months to recheck a heartworm test.

Make Your Kitchen Cleaner Than Ever Before

With These 3 Hacks

You cook your meals, make your coffee, wash the dishes, and do so many other activities in your kitchen. It’s no surprise that our kitchens are often the most trafficked rooms in our homes. Our kitchens are also commonly the messiest rooms in the house since they’re used to cook meals. Trying to keep your kitchen clean on a daily basis can be maddening. Every time you make a meal, there’s another mess to clean up. It seems like there’s no end to the kitchen cleaning process. Thankfully, there are a few hacks you can try that will lengthen your time between cleanings and ideally help your kitchen sparkle. Garbage Disposal Cleaning If your home has a garbage disposal, there’s a good chance that it’s one of the dirtiest appliances in your kitchen. It’s also one of the hardest things to clean since it’s located in your sink. But there is an easy trick to keep it fresh. Fill an ice cube tray with water and lemon wedges, then stick it in the freezer. Once it’s frozen, crack the ice cubes free, and send them down the drain with the garbage disposal turned on. The lemons will improve the smell while the ice removes any excess grime and cleans the blades. No Need for Auto Clean How do you normally clean your oven? Do you press the auto-clean button and let it run? While this works, it will often leave your house with a displeasing smell and can even set off your fire alarms. You can make a mixture of 1/3 cup water, 1/3 cup white vinegar, and 1/2 cup baking soda. Spray the inside of your oven with the mixture, but avoid the heating elements. After 8–12 hours, clean the oven with soapy water and dry it using a cloth. Your oven will be cleaner than you might’ve even imagined. Quick Cabinet Cleaning Your cabinets and pantry can get gross quickly and attract bugs if the items inside of them are open or spilled. If you try to clean your cabinets with a rag, you’ll end up missing some of the crumbs and dirt. Instead, use your vacuum cleaner to capture any debris and ensure they are spotless. It’s a quick and easy method to keep your cabinets clean.

BLACK MAGIC How One Cat Saved His Owner’s Life

Black cats can have it rough. People associate themwith Halloween and bad luck, they can be tricky to photograph, and they make up a full third of all cats surrendered to animal shelters. But one special black feline named Piran proved his worth when he led rescuers to his 83-year-old owner after she fell down a ravine. In August 2021, the woman went for a walk near her home in Cornwall, England. When she didn’t return, her neighbors started to worry. They formed a search operation, but there was a lot of ground to cover in their rural surroundings. They had little luck in their investigation until they heeded the advice of her cat. While the search crew worked, Piran refused to move from one specific spot, and he meowed incessantly. That wasn’t like him, so eventually, Tamar Longmuir, a neighbor assisting in the search, decided to find out the reason for all the racket. Longmuir called to the woman while investigating the cat’s noises and heard a faint response. Piran had staked out his position where his owner had fallen — 70 feet down a ravine located at the edge of a cornfield.

were called and quickly rescued the woman. “Without the cat waiting at

the gate to that field,” Longmuir added, “it could have been hours later that I or anyone else would have checked in there.”

The injured woman was taken to the hospital in good spirits and stable condition, avoiding a potential tragedy. Meanwhile, the police posted a photograph of Piran’s handsome black face on social media and declared him a hero. Though he reportedly received many treats, Piran’s real reward was a job well done. “The cat is very attached to her,” Longmuir said. Cats may not generally be known for their loyalty, but maybe it’s time for the stereotype to get an update. Clearly, Piran the black cat was anything but bad luck. He proved it with the grandest act possible — saving his human’s life.

According to Longmuir, “She had gone through the barbed wire and was laying in the stream—we think she had been in there for hours.” Emergency services
