The Curriculum
Children follow individualised curriculum pathways, either semi - formal or subject - specific, according to ability, with EHCP Outcomes and preparation for life after Maple View at the core of their pathway. Children are grouped with compatible peers based on development cognition levels and not necessarily chronological age. The multi - disciplinary teams work together to support development and learning through the establishment and tracking of Learning Intentions. Given the specialist focus of our school in meeting children ’ s development needs in a small - scale setting, we do not offer a sixth form. Children engage in classroom - based learning, including daily literacy, numeracy and PSHE activities. In the afternoons they can access horticulture and small animal care, cooking, Forest School and community - based activities and have the opportunity to work with children from other classes. There is a strong focus on creativity and well - being, with music at the start of the day and yoga to close. A half - termly book, accessible to all, is the focus of whole - school cross - curricular planning, encompassing the areas of music, art, literacy, science and the humanities. It also supports reading at all ages. Individual and group therapy sessions take place within the classroom, within therapy rooms, outdoors or in the community throughout the school day, with communication and sensory - regulation at the heart of the programmes. Personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) is at the heart of the curriculum, and intertwined into daily activities, with a focus on social development and equipping children with the skills and resilience required to safely and effectively participate within a range of communities. We belong to the ‘ Kindness School ’ programme and daily acts of kindness are encouraged and celebrated.
The school day is from 9:00 - 3.00 Monday – Friday. Class sizes are between 3 and 5 students in each of the 4 classes. Children are grouped according to their age, ability, communication style, social dynamics and sensory needs. In the afternoons, children have the opportunity to work with peers from different classes.
Progress is measured, using MAPP (Mapping and Assessing Personal Progress) in four key areas:
“ We are truly excited about the next educational chapter our son will be starting in September at Maple View. The school looks absolutely amazing, and the staff extremely welcoming and enthusiastic. The inclusion of skilled and experienced speech and language therapists and a dedicated occupational therapist makes the school so unique and essential in reaching positive outcomes for our son. ” Parent

The Home offers up to 8 children, both male and female, and of mixed abilities, the opportunity to live at the school. Residential Provision The ethos of Maple View Children ’ s Home is our individualised approach. Every element of the care package is bespoke to the individual child; whether that be the number of nights they stay, their specific routine, the input from professional services, diet, cultural and religious preferences. Each child has a bespoke care plan built around them. The level of support, the constraints of the environment, tolerance of peers and levels of risk, is established by the multi - disciplinary team prior to the child joining Maple View. This is combined to form a detailed profile of their support needs. In addition, each child has a Positive Behaviour Support Plan, Risk Assessment and specific information to that young person. This forms their Care Plan. The Care Plan travels with the child throughout the home as well as during the school day to ensure consistency of approach is maintained in all settings. The pivotal person in the child ’ s care is their Key Worker. Each child is nominated a Key Worker prior to their arrival. The Key Worker is the main contact for parents or carers, as well as professionals. They act as an advocate for the child, as well as their families, and attend all reviews and key meetings about the child. Each child has a room of their own, personalised for them from the start of their time at Maple View. The Key Worker is responsible for this from the outset of assessment, plus specific adaptions to the environment are made to ensure it is a safe and a positive living space according to the individual needs of the child. All children receive pocket money appropriate to their age, and are encouraged to manage their finances appropriately, at a practical level to their ability. Children who are with us on a 52 week basis also have a clothing allowance, as well as an allowance to support transport home or to see significant others six times a year, as well as a holiday. We support family contact for all children. We understand that children need to be entertained as boredom can often be a trigger for behaviours. We are very fortunate to be placed close to Derby City Centre and close to the Peak District National Park and are therefore able to offer children city based and countryside activities.
We are committed to ensuring that no child is prevented from experiencing and enjoying their childhood because of their SEND encompassing the Aims of the school detailed on page 1. We have an indoor sensory room, soft play and creative play areas. Evening activities are planned including, but not exclusively, walks, shopping, cinema, youth clubs, arts and craft activities, swimming, music activities, baking and games. It is essential that the children we care for have a voice and have a say in how the home is run. Their Key Worker has an essential role in acting as their advocate and ensuring their views are made known. To support the Key Worker in this role we also use the services of an Independent Advocate. In addition to this staff organise regular House Meetings to ensure the child ’ s voice is heard.
“ This is an absolutely brilliant school due to the hard working staff. In the three months my son has been at Maple View he has improved a lot. Maple View school has excellent indoor and outdoor facilities for all the children. ” Parent
