Wade Guyton Untitled , 2005 Epson UltraChrome inkjet on linen, 60 × 38 in. Courtesy Matthew Marks Gallery Collection of Nancy and Steve Crown

This painting—in which three U-shapes hover above a crackling flame— demonstrates Guyton’s engagement with computer printing technology as a tool for painting. It was created by scanning a found image of a flame and then printing the digital file directly onto primed linen. The unpredictable smudges, glitches, and rivulets that occur as the Epson printer struggles with the material are integral to its appeal. “Fire is always captivating,” the artist has explained, “destructive, but also generative. And of course hot.” —HJ
