Anish Kapoor Untitled, 2022 Oil on canvas, 108 × 84 in. Courtesy Lisson Gallery
Though best known as a sculptor of conceptual installations, Kapoor has a long-standing relationship with the medium and history of painting, using it as a language through which to address elemental themes of birth and death. This work—executed in the artist’s signature colors of black and a bloody shade of crimson—has a menacing, visceral quality, heightened by its monumental scale. In the context of the exhibition, its molten lava-like forms suggest the capacity of the color red to speak of destruction. —HJ
