Jill Mulleady Untitled (Eruption) II , 2023 Oil on linen, 59 × 65 in. Courtesy the artist and Galerie Neu, Berlin Craig Robins Collection, Miami
Mulleady’s figurative paintings draw upon allegorical symbols and art historical references to create otherworldly scenes that oscillate between the picturesque and the disquieting. In this painting, the artist creates a stark contrast between the sparsely painted foreground and the expressionistic calamity that looms over the contorted figures. Its dramatic nature suggests the influence of the experimental theater director and artist Antonin Artaud, who Mulleady has acknowledged as an important influence. —HJ
