Yayoi Kusama Pink Nets , 1960 Oil on board, 24 × 24 in. Private collection
Following her arrival in New York from Japan in 1958, Kusama began a series of paintings composed using small, individual arced brushstrokes to create a repetitive pattern of specks and dots. In her autobiography, the artist explained that these Infinity Nets reflect her desire to “predict and measure the infinity of the unbounded universe.” They also have a more haunting psychological undertone, manifesting personal hallucinations of being suffocated by endless netting. —HJ
