Allison Katz Gradiva , 2024 Oil and sand on linen, 86⅝ × 74⅞ in. Courtesy the artist and Hauser & Wirth Collection Y.D.C.
This painting depicts a female figure in motion—the artist’s own Gradiva— who walks across a canvas emblazoned with Katz’s initials. While its composition is based on an earlier work, Catwalk (2023), it functions as the skeleton of that painting laid bare: its colors inverted, as if subject to an X-ray. For Katz, the ashen figure might be seen as an apparition: a manifestation of Freud’s Gradiva, who emerges in ancient Pompeii’s noontime ghost hour. —HJ
