Gertrude Abercrombie Leaf, Ribbon, Domino, Dice, Shell, Pieces of Eight , 1954 Oil on Masonite, 7½ × 12⅜ in.; 15⅛ × 20⅛ in. framed Courtesy the estate of the artist and Karma Private collection

Inspired by the European Surrealist movement, Abercrombie painted complex self-portraits, enigmatic interiors, and fantastical landscapes that hover between reality and the subconscious. Some are characterized by a dry sense of humor, as the title of this work reveals: there are no pieces of eight (historic Spanish silver coins) in the composition, but the domino displays eight dots and the dice show a total of eight on both sides. —HJ
