Jonathan Lyndon Chase unpacking bags , 2023 Acrylic and marker on canvas, 48 × 36 in. Courtesy the artist and Company Gallery, New York
Chase’s work explores the boundaries between public and private space to reclaim the Black body from historical misrepresentation and celebrate queer and non-binary experiences. In unpacking bags , the artist uses an everyday kitchen task as a backdrop for a tender and visceral portrayal of human connection. The multiple hands painted in different positions across the back convey a sense of movement, suggesting the passionate intimacy of a moment shared between lovers. —HJ
