Dorothea Rockburne The Discourse , from Robe Series, 1976 Oil, gesso, and pigment on linen, 34 × 55 in. Courtesy David Nolan Gallery Collection of Rita and Jeffrey Adler
The brightly colored geometric shapes in this painting are inspired by the folds of clothing found in Italian Renaissance paintings. Their sharp-edged dynamism is emphasized by the angularity of the canvas, which creates a sense of movement akin to the spinning of plates. Rockburne studied with a mathematician in the early 1950s and was profoundly influenced by his teaching of geometry. Here, she uses that geometry to create shapes that mirror and reflect back upon each other. —HJ
