Cecilia Vicuña Leg Tits , 2021 Oil on canvas, 61 × 50⅞ in. Private collection
‘ Best known for her Quipus —sculptural hangings made from knotted woolen threads—Vicuña also paints figurative canvases synthesizing pre-Columbian, Indigenous, and popular art and folklore with her knowledge of European painting. They are often characterized by flat compositions and esoteric symbolism. As the title of Leg Tits suggests, the four pairs of amputated limbs are humorously covered in breast-like forms. This surrealist conflation of misplaced body parts is set against a dreamlike stream that flows behind them. —HJ
