Hugh Hayden Jazz … , 2019 Seasoned cast iron, 16 × 10⅝ × 7 in.

Courtesy the artist and Lisson Gallery Collection of Carol and Harry Cebron

Hayden is particularly interested in the impact of African culture on food, art, and music. In this work, he uses a sand-casting technique to fuse the form of a wooden West African–style mask with a found cast-iron skillet. This rudimentary fabrication process inevitably results in a subtle abstraction of the forms of the original objects. For Hayden, the resultant work is syncretic, enriched with layers of functional, cultural, and ceremonial meaning. —HJ
