Artist’s ephemera from the studio of Ron Mueck, n.d. Collection Glenn and Amanda Fuhrman NY, courtesy the FLAG Art Foundation
Mueck is best known for sculptures rendered in lifelike detail, produced using techniques honed during his early career as a prop and puppet maker for television and film. Here, individual strands of hair are painstakingly inserted into a sample of silicone as part of an exploration of materials in preparation for a larger sculpture. Given as a gift by Mueck to the collectors Amanda and Glenn Fuhrman, this uncanny object has an eerie, disturbing presence, conjuring suggestions of witchcraft or the supernatural. —HJ
