Lynda Benglis Palm-Phallus/Landscape II , 1992 Terracotta with porcelain glaze, 13 × 9 × 12 in. Jorge M. Pérez Collection, Miami

In November 1974, Benglis placed an advertisement in Artforum magazine in which she appeared naked and wielding an oversize dildo. It remains emblematic of her wryly provocative engagement with gender debates in the art world. In the context of the exhibition, this work evokes the omnipresence of the phallus as a protective totem in the ancient world. It also demonstrates the artist’s exploitation of the physical qualities of her materials to produce surprising effects: here, fired terracotta has the flowing, melted surface quality of her works in polyurethane foam. —HJ
