Pompeii I 10.7 (House of the Craftsman) Pompeii Archaeological Park, Inv. N. 5420 3⅞ × 3¾ × 2¼ in. 1st century CE © MIC – Parco Archeologico di Pompei
In this pestle, the grip is shaped like a finger bent into an L shape, with its nail indicated. It was used, together with a mortar, to grind both edible and inorganic material—for example, the pigments used to produce the colors used in fresco painting. —AC
