Portraying naked bodies laid out in various states of entanglement, these paintings were composed using fragments of Victorian lithographs depicting Roman orgies, which were in turn an illustration of De figuris Veneris , an anthology of ancient writings on erotic topics. In this work, the elongated form of the portal-like pictorial frame imitates the shape of the eye. The viewer is placed in the position of voyeur, as if peeping through a keyhole onto an illicit scene. âHJ
