Berwald Red Angus - Annual Red Angus Bull & Female Sale [3/11/26]

Dear Cattlemen, Neighbors & Friends, Welcome to our 4th Annual Bull and Female Sale. It is an exciting time to be in the cattle business and the Red Angus breed, and we are grateful for everyone that has expressed interest in our program. We are very proud of our sale offering and feel the genetics and phenotypes of our cattle speak for themselves. We have built our program around a select group of genetics from some of the most well established and suc - cessful programs in the breed. With these base genetics we have gone into a very intensive ET and AI program to mass produce the kind that we like and know will work for our customers. Our main goal in all of this is to build a cow herd of very maternal females that can produce progeny with growth and carcass merit. Our experience milking 1000+ head of dairy cows has made us very aware of the importance of feet, legs, and udders, and has had a very positive effect on how we select and cull for structural soundness. We were truly humbled by the outcome of our previous three production sales, as well as being selected as the 2024 RAAA Breeder of the Year. Our commitment to this industry and desire to bring you the same quality genetics, only in more quantity, has been a goal. We are continuing to produce more bulls, better bulls, for less. This year we selected 125 bulls from well over 200 head of male calves to go on the sale and the majority of them are ET calves out of our top cow families. We are also offering some of our best registered heifers again this year - and back by popular demand, we are offering a group of our best commercial heifers selected right from the top... this is a pretty special set of females! As all of you know, this lifestyle is a family effort and requires sacrifice and input from everyone. While I spend most of my time outdoors with the cattle, my wife, Becky, handles all the bookkeeping and the kids’ busy schedules. Our oldest Jaylee (16) enjoys riding horses and showing cattle, all while managing volleyball, track, cheerleading, and once again she and her gymnastics team won the State Championship for the fourth year in a row! Jaedyn (10) is responsible for all the pet chores and she showed for the first time this summer, winning Champion Breeding Gilt at the county fair. Jamison (6) started kindergarten this year and he and Jocelyn (4) still enjoy riding around with dad, whether that’s in the chopper, feed wagon, payloader or pickup – learning all the ropes to be his future partners. Jaxson would have turned 14 this past year – he is forever loved and missed. My mother, KIm, lives on the farm and still helps where she can. We would love to have you join us on March 11th, whether in person or by DV Auction. We are sincerely grateful for our loyal customers over the years and look forward to visiting with old friends and new on sale day. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give me a call! Sincerely, Austin Berwald

Our extended family... we couldn’t get it all done without them.

Mike Duenwald... he is our resident mechanic and when he is not managing the chopping crew, he is our master pit boss on the barbecue... as is evident by the great food at our sale!

Jose Alonso... our animal husbandry specialist. He is an irreplaceable asset on the farm, managing the calving barn and making sure all the many moving parts on the farm are working.

Dennis Pedersen... our right hand man, he worked for my grandfather, my father and now me. He has been a lifelong friend.

Lizbeth Landin... she is now in her second year of helping during the calving season.

Tobias Hernandez... when he is not riding a buffalo, he is busy making sure everything gets fed around the farm.

Roger Krein... our neighbor that farms and runs cows and loves the Reds. He and his son, Nathan, help with what ever needs to be done and are invaluable to have so close.

Trevor Gallaher... he helps pick up the slack around the farm doing the odd jobs. He will deliver many of the bulls this spring.

Matt DeNeui... he and his crew get the bulls & heifers looking good for the sale. If you need your cattle clipped and pictured give Matt a call at (605) 359-7189.

Riding for the Brand!

Chopping season is just around the corner and we’re usually running six trucks, the merger and the chopper non-stop. Some of the crew that help during the summer are not pictured and include Dylan Tirrel, Dalten Pedersen, Aaron Jenkins, John & Sam Krause, and Casey Schellhaas.

ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value). HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value). GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value). CED ........ Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value) BW ........ - Wake Up 5150 might just be the most unique bull we’ve ever raised and/or identified in the Red Angus breed. We certainly have never had a bull scan a 9.20 IMF, and on top of that he still

Consistency... his full sister, Jaylo 5117, posted a 1108 AYW, 7.56 IMF & 14.7 REA! She Sells as Lot 133!

has all the other attributes we search for in a bull... Growth, Maternal, CW and REA. What excites us even the most is that he was the calf we identified this summer as the standout, and just like the previous three sales, that bull has always led off our sale. - His dam, Jaylo 3070, was our #1 WW heifer back in ‘23 so she went into our heifer IVF flush program, produced 6 ET calves, raised a top performing AI heifer calf, bred back AI

again, and was one of the first females to calve this year. She is a black/red carrier daughter of HCC Whitewater that was raised by one of our most prolific and productive donors, Jaylo 0007. Just the previous year 0007 produced the $90,000 Berwald Confident 2044 to ABS, and he is now a household name sire and one of the most highly sampled AI bulls in the breed. - Selling 1/2 interest and full possession.

Reliability... his granddam, Jaylo 0007, produced the $90.000 Berwald Confident 2044 at ABS and an $85,000 full sister!

- We took the plunge and dove in head first to create these outcross genetics using some of the most sought-after and proven bulls from the Angus breed on our lead donors. Linchpin 5067 is the result of that endeavor, and he is exactly what we were hoping for! We truly believe that he will make some of the most amazing females the breed has ever seen. - He stacks two of the most productive females in both the Red and Black Angus worlds, with his dam, Abigrace 0018, and his paternal granddam, Basin Joy 9140, who is also the dam of the popular growth and carcass monster, Basin Jameson 1076. We can only imagine the red babies we will have on the ground out of him next spring! - Selling 1/2 interest and full possession.

The future females of the Red Angus breed begin with him!

7

You ‘Gotta have Faith’... put your faith in these two full brothers!

- Every spring we go on the hunt for some new and exciting sire to plug into the program, and when we laid eyes on 44 Faithfull 2764 at Western Sires in NE, we though he would be a great match for our leading donor, Abigrace 0018. The next generation of red calves that hit the ground out of these two brothers is going to be wild! - Faithfull 5149 might be a tick behind his brother in stature and performance, but the DNA indicates that he is every bit as good or maybe even better. We like him for his exceptional build and sound structure, coupled with a calving ease and top 1% growth and carcass traits. - His dam, 0018, needs no introductions in the Red Angus world. With over $500,000 in progeny, she has produced numerous herdbulls in seedstock operations all around the country. Last year her son, Berwald Lucius 4132, blew the lid off of our spring sale when he sold to Allen Brothers in AR, Twedt Red Angus in ND, and Nordlund Stock Farm in MN, for a sale topping $147,500. - Selling 1/2 interest and full possession.

Righteous... his amazing data, power, stature and type is justifiable!

- Righteous 5155 is one of the most powerful bulls we have ever seen in this breed! He boasted our #1 Weaning weight and #1 Yearling weight, and his 7.59 IMF is only second to Wake Up 5150 featured as Lot 1. It is worth a trip to South Dakota this spring, if only so you can verify that his top is really that big!! - The carcass quality movement has been strong in the Angus breed for years now, and the demand for cattle to grade upper 2/3s of Choice and Prime has never been more important than it is today. 44 Farms in TX has connections with Walmart and is a major supplier for this kind of product, so when they raised a ‘Carcass’ bred bull that sold to Krebs Ranch and Thomas Ranch, we took notice. - Someone mentioned the other day that the computer didn’t like Abigrace 0018 very much be- cause her Herd Builder index (We call it Herd Killer) was low. Well when you live with these cattle every day like we do, you know when something works and something doesn’t... Abigrace 0018 flat works and all you have to do is ask all the seedstock breeders around the country that are using her sons. - Selling 1/2 interest and full possession.

- Unrestricted 5005 was very much in the discussion to lead off this sale as Lot 1, and in many offerings it wouldn’t even by a question... this stud is all bull! You would be hard pressed to find a bull that packs more performance and masculinity onto a loose made, free moving frame than Unristricted. - His superior existence is no fluke... he stacks some of the most proven, successful cow families the breed has ever seen, including Stony, Abigrace, Jolene and Laura. His ultra-productive dam, Stony 2094, is climbing the ladder to the top of our donor cows with progeny like Stony 5018, the $100,000 high selling female in the ‘25 ND Red Select Sale, going to Kruze & Bailey Robinson in ND.

She is one of two full sisters in the herd and her sister, Stony 2091, showed the way last year with her $170,000 ‘24 ND Red Select Sale topping daughter and her $28,000 son, Berwald Eight Ninety 4006, was Lot 1 going to TJS Red Angus in MT. - Selling 1/2 interest and full possession.

- One thing is definite... we want to plug this dude back into our program! Absolutely 5008 has been on our radar all summer, fall and winter long, and now that all the data is in, we are excited about carrying on this outcross pedigree with him. HIs 6.82 IMF is off the charts, but more impressively, he combines it with a huge 17.0 REA and 1.40 REA/CWT. - His dam, Abigrace 2024, has been on Austin’s ‘Favorite List’ since the day she was born, and her oustanding producing ability has only made him love her more. In her debut last year, she had five sons sell, including a pair of herdbulls by Mechanic, Fixher 4062 and Massive 4052, that sold to Gene Brown in ND for $29,000 and $18,000 respectively. Her natural Jumpstart son sold to Wasem’s in ND

for $14,500, and her black/red gene carrier Confidence son sold to Mathias Ranch in AR for $50,000. Not too bad for her first outing! - This isn’t the last you will hear about Smoky Y Absolute K94... his progeny dominated Shick’s sale offering this spring in WY. - Selling 1/2 interest and full possession.

- Lot 27 has always been a pretty special kind of bull. In fact the entire Destiny x Jaylo 0007 flush turned out pretty darn good. Of course she is the dam of Berwald Confident 2044 that topped our first sale to ABS. - Be sure and check out Lot 27’s full sister selling as Lot 134.
