Tasmanian Hospitality Review - April/May 2026

Editorial

April is National Greyhound Adoption Month, providing the perfect time to showcase Greyhounds As Pets (GAP). Contrary to everything you see from them on the racetrack, greyhounds enjoy life after racing at a slower pace and appreciate the simple pleasures in life. They’re low-maintenance and make great pets, having been through the GAP program to assist with the transition from elite athlete to couch potato. Greyhounds are quiet, well-mannered, and very easy to live with. They are friendly, affectionate, calm, clean, loving, trusting and good-natured. Tasracing’s GAP facility at Mangalore in southern Tasmania has recently been refurbished, giving the GAP team all the tools they need to help dogs transition into pet life. Last year, more than 100 greyhounds found new homes through GAP, a notable rise compared to previous years. To learn more about fostering or adopting a greyhound, visit tasracing.com.au/gap . In May, the GAP team will join Tasracing’s presence at Agfest 2026, taking place from 7-9 May. The

event highlights Tasracing’s dedication to animal welfare and showcases the wide range of career and training opportunities within the racing industry. Over the three days, the public can meet some of the state’s top young jockeys and drivers and learn what it takes to skilfully handle a 600-kilogram racehorse. Of course, the greyhounds are always a highlight at Agfest. Pat one of these beautiful animals, and you’ll quickly understand what all the fuss is about. More than 6,400 individuals are involved in the Tasmanian racing industry as an employee, participant or volunteer and the industry is responsible for generating over $200 million in value-added contribution to the Tasmanian economy. Tasmanian racing is a big industry, with over 300 race meetings run every year. Agfest provides the platform to showcase this great industry, and Tasracing looks forward to welcoming the public to Quercus Park to learn more.

Tassie, the perfect place to race.
