GREETINGS FROM TBILISI Pozdrav iz Tbilisija

Reč dobrodošlice

Welcome message

May 2025

Maj 2025.

Dear passengers,

Dragi putnici,

May is the month when dreams of summer travel turn into reality; when dates are picked, tickets purchased, and the imagination receives a specific direction. We have prepared a number of novelties for you that will enrich your summer with new experiences, more comfortable flights and, of course, inspirational destinations. Thanks to two new spots on Air Serbia’s destinations map, the summer Mediterranean dream will become a reality. Starting on 6 th June, we will be flying directly to Mykonos, while we will also introduce flights to Alghero on the beautiful island of Sardinia as early as 10 th June. The scent of the Greek sea and magical Italian charm are now within easy reach – just a two-hour flight away from Belgrade. Another important journey, in a completely different spirit, begins on 15 th June with the introduction of Air Serbia flights to Tbilisi. Our new direct flight to the Georgian capital will be available year-round, three times a week, opening the doors to the Caucasus region for travellers. Discovering Tbilisi and all its charms has never been easier, so book your flight and explore a city that combines rich history, culture and irresistible energy. One important point in our network of destinations is Chicago, a city to which we’ve been flying since 17 th May 2023. For a full two years, this route has been connecting two continents and, more importantly, represents a significant link for many members of the Western Balkan diaspora, enabling them to more easily meet up with family and friends. Family is a source of love and support, and the times we spend together often remain cherished memories forever. This is why the International Day of Families, which is celebrated worldwide on 15 th May, is the perfect time to travel somewhere with your loved ones and enjoy the benefits of exploring new destinations. We recommend Paris and Barcelona, as cities that offer numerous attractions for children of all ages, making them the perfect choice for unforgettable family trips. At the very end of the month, on 31 st May, we will mark International Cabin Crew Day – a day dedicated to celebrating our dear colleagues who welcome you every day with a smile and their friendly and professional manner. They are the ones who make your journey more comfortable, meticulously providing for your comfort and safety, and ensuring that you feel welcome. Their dedication isn’t measured merely in kilometres travelled, but also in smiles and kind words provided, and in moments of care dedicated to you, our passengers. Thank you for choosing Air Serbia. Wherever you happen to be travelling to, we wish you a pleasant flight.

Тoplo srce Gruzije

The warming heart of Georgia

Did you know that the name Tbilisi is based on the Georgian word tbili, meaning warm? That’s because the city is named after the warm sulp- hur springs that remain popular bathing spots to this day. Those baths are among our recom- mended spots to visit, but all the sites we su- ggest here – from temples and museums, to hidden gems of history – are rich in culture and architecture. While some landmarks represent iconic symbols of Tbilisi, others offer a deep di- ve into Georgian culture. Some landmarks, like Narikala Fortress, are as ancient as Tbilisi itse- lf, while others, such as the Bridge of Peace, are modern additions that have emerged in the ear- ly 21 st century. It's worth noting that one day is only enough to scratch the surface of everything on offer. We recommend setting aside at least 2-3 days to explore Tbilisi's highlights, and to return to find some others on your own. It will be ea - sy with Air Serbia‘s direct flights starting on 15 th June, so be sure to take advantage of the opportunity...

Tvrđava Narikala Ovo je najstariji spomenik u Tbilisiju. Izgrađen u 4. ve - ku nove ere, kada je i Tbilisi osnovan, tokom godina je do - živeo brojna proširenja i re - konstrukcije. Njegov današnji izgled oblikovan je tokom 7. i 8. veka pod arapskom vlaš - ć u. Narikala Fortress Tbilisi‘s oldest monument, it was built in the 4 th century AD, just as Tbilisi was itself being founded, and has undergone numerous expansions and re- constructions over the centu- ries. Its contemporary appea- rance was formed during the period of Arab rule in the 7 th and 8 th centuries. Its current name, Narikala, is derived from the Turkic word meaning li- ttle fortress and was assigned to this fortification during the Mongol era. It is today Tbilisi‘s most-visited tourist attraction. You can reach it by climbing the stairs from the Old Town or taking a cable car from Rike Park. The top offers stunning views over Tbilisi, encompa- ssing the charming quarters of the Old Town below and the new city stretching out beyond the Kura River. Metekhi Church Once upon a time, the roc- ky banks of the Kura River we- re home to a castle, complete with a monastery and chur- ch, that served as the residen- ce of Georgian kings. However, the march of time and nume- rous invasions led to the castle falling into ruin, leaving only the small Metekhi Church that to- day stands alone. Erected in

the 12 th century, this church oc- cupies the site of the final re - sting place of Georgia’s first martyr, Queen Shushanik Ran- ska. You’ll find a small looko - ut spot immediately in front of the Church that offers a gre- at view of Narikala Fortress on the opposite side of the river. There’s also a statue of Tbilisi’s founder, Vakhtang I Gorgasa- li, making it a must for shooting an Instagram image. Bridge of Peace The Bridge of Peace is a pede- strian walkway traversing the Kura that was built in 2010 and is today a standout fea- ture of modern Tbilisi. Easi- ly observable from both Na- rikala Fortress and Metekhi Church, this bridge was desi- gned by Italian Michele De Lu- cchi and shipped over in par- ts from Italy. Covering a length of 156 metres, it links the Old Town with the contemporary Rike Park. The bridge’s steel structure has unique lighting – with 30,000 bulbs broad- casting an hourly message in Morse code rendering the pe- riodic table of elements acro- ss the parapets of the bridge. According to the designer, this communication is a celebrati- on of “life and peace between peoples”.

A U OKOLINI TBILISIJA...

where famous Russian wri- ter and diplomat Alexander Gri- boyedov is buried, has become a traditional final resting place for notable Georgian and Ru- ssian figures. Georgian National Museum Rather than representing a sin- gle museum, the Georgian Na- tional Museum is a network of over ten museums scattered across Tbilisi and other Geor- gian cities. The main building sits at the heart of the capi- tal, on Rustaveli Avenue, and showcases the most fascina- ting pieces of Georgian culture, history and art from ancient ti- mes to the present day. A sin- gle day might not be enough to explore everything it has to offer – from ancient artefacts to medieval Christian art and works by Georgian painters. Sulphur Baths Known since the time of Tbili- si’s founding, the warm sulphur springs might even have even inspired the naming of the city, as ‘tbili’ means ‘warm’. The ico- nic bathhouses that we see to-

day were built in the 17 th and 18 th centuries, when they gai- ned popularity among famous visitors like Dumas and Push- kin. Owning one of these bat- hs was once a status symbol among the elite. Each bath has its own character, with unique façades and interiors, rendering them distinctive Tbilisi attracti- ons. The Orbeliani Baths, or the Blue Baths, are famed for the- ir vibrant tile work, while the ol- dest, the Irakli Bath, has its own unique story. Botanical Garden A tranquil haven spanning 128 hectares, the country’s Natio- nal Botanical Garden is located just behind Narikala Fortress in central Tbilisi. With shaded paths, gazebos, waterfalls and bridges, this place is the per- fect destination for those see- king a romantic stroll, bike ride, or nature photo op away from the hubbub of the city. Origi- nally designated as royal gar- dens, the site formally beca- me a botanical garden in 1845. It is now home to over 3,500 plant species, including some rare finds.

There’s plenty more to see and do in the Georgian capital, but here we present a few gems located beyond the city that are worthy of your attention. Betania Monastery This quaint monastery is loca- ted approximately 35 km from Tbilisi, nestled in the mounta- ins. Built in the 12 th century, it’s famous for the incredible fres- coes adorning its walls, whi- ch are known as the complex’s greatest treasures. The mo- nastery’s ancient past is shro- uded in mystery and the pla- ce was only really revived in 1850, following years of ne- glect, while it has since under- gone extensive restoration. If you’re keen to see some of the most impressive frescoes aro- und, this is the right destinati- on for you.

The Gipsy kings is a group that was born in 1987 under the leadership of two families from the south of France who sought to highlight gypsy culture

I svaki dan iznova. – Iskreno, to nas uvek iznenadi. – Izuzetno i fantastično. I zahvalni smo... „Džipsi kings“ imaju jedinstven spoj tradicionalne flamenko muzike sa

pop i latino uticajima. – Znate, mi pevamo srcem, sa pu- no strasti. – Pevaćemo sve poznate pesme uključujuć i posebno „Bamboleo“, „Vo- lare“, „Djobi Djoba“ i mnoge druge. Pesme „Džipsi kingsa“ često donose oseć aj radosti i slavlja.

If a song doesn‘t originate from the heart and from your soul, I doubt it can be a hit – at least not an enduring hit for generations to come, says the famous Diego Baliardo, who brings his Gipsy Kings to Belgrade on 20 th May

B elgrade will become the cen- tre of the music world on 20 th May, when the legend- ary Gipsy Kings will pro- vide another unforgettable evening filled with rhythm and energy. The organisation of this musical spec- tacle is signed by Skymusic, the leader in the production of the biggest events in the region, which will once again provide the audience with an unforget- table experience. At the head of Gipsy Kings is the tal- ented Diego Baliardo, known for his recognisable energy and passion from the first note. His performances bring authentic melodies that combine tradi-

tion with directions of modern music. The concert will be held outdoors, at one of Belgrade Waterfront’s most at- tractive locations - Sava Park. This is an ideal place for an unforgettable party under the stars. Ahead of this exciting Belgrade show, we speak with Diego Baliardo and remind him of Saint- Tropez and the time when his native Southern France was dominated by the stunning Brigitte Bardot... Brigitte Bardot was important in the formation and early career of the Gipsy Kings during the ‘70s. What was the French Riviera like back then? “We met in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and she was so enthusiastic about our music that she spontaneously invited us to perform at her birthday party. And from then on, we played at each of her big parties. And soon not on- ly hers, but those of many of the rich and beautiful, the jet set on the Cote d'Azur back then, it was just a crazy time (laughs).” If you had a chance to perform for Brigitte again today, which song would you choose and why? “It’s easy: A Mi Manera… because she re- ally lived this motto throughout her life.” What was it like back then when you realised that a certain song had exploded and become a hit across Europe? “It was really exceptional for us. "Bam- boleo" or other titles were actual- ly songs that came naturally to us and that we actually first played and sang in the family only. Then, suddenly re- alising that the whole world hears and loves these songs was kind of bizarre.”

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

Everyone sings that song, but few know what it means or represents. "Bamboleo actually stands for this gyp- sy life. To take life as it comes and as it is. I live my life. I live as I am, straight with- out bending. And every day anew. This is Bamboleo!” You are seemingly always on tour. What’s it like spending so much time on the road? “When we're on the road, we're not really on the road. We're still family and we feel that way. On the one hand, we like to be on the road, but if there is an opportuni- ty to go home for a few days in between, we all want to go! You cry when you leave and you cry when you arrive (laughs).” Your band has been active since 1978. What does it take to maintain musical longevity for over 40 years? “Honestly, it is always a surprise for us. There is certainly ‘80s nostalgia, but that alone wouldn’t explain everything. We always kept and keep singing with passion and with our heart. We think people feel that emotional connection, including the youngest audiences that weren’t even born in the ‘80s…” Spanish music has become increasingly global, to the point at which the songs are hummed by people who don’t even know the language. What is your perspective on that? “That is exceptional and fantastic for us. Our songs are known and sung all over the world, even if the language isn’t known. You can only do that with songs that bring love and joy and a sort of “fi- esta-spirit” to the people.” Your music has been embraced by audiences worldwide, including in Serbia. How does it feel to see your music connect with people from such diverse backgrounds? “You know, it is a real pleasure for us to see that everywhere we go to per- form, there is always so much joy and fun in the audience. People dance and sing along – they have done so since the very beginning and still do so now- adays. It is fantastic to see that. And we are grateful for that, because we know it isn’t a given.”

Porodica je glavni fokus svih Roma. Isto je i sa nama / Family is the main interest of all gypsy people, and it’s the same with us

The Gipsy Kings present a unique blend of traditional flamenco music with pop and Latin influences. Could you tell us about the creative process behind this fusion? “There isn’t a real process of writing songs or composing. Many come to us by playing and jamming together and sometimes they develop within the fam- ily. That’s because we can say that this kind of music and the influences and blend of styles are innate and inscribed in our DNA.” Your music incorporates traditional instruments like the flamenco guitar. How important is it for you to preserve and showcase these traditional elements in your songs? “The Flamenco guitar is the backbone of our music. It is the element that makes every song so easily recognisable to au- diences worldwide. And, for every one of us, it is his very unique, personal gui- tar that matters. We have to preserve this Flamenco element at all times.” Your band is known for its infectious rhythms and energetic performances. How do you maintain the same level of passion on stage after all these years? “You know, we sing with our heart, with our passion. And we want to share this and we want the public to feel it with us. I still want to share this after so many years of touring. Because it is both giv- ing and taking – the energy with which the audience pays us back makes us both joyful and grateful for doing what we love to do.” What’s in store for your Belgrade performance this time around? What kind of setlist is planned? “The setlist will include all the famous songs, including Bamboleo, Volare, Djo-

bi Djoba and many others. But we will al- so play new songs that will be on our next album. We are going to release 5 – 6 new singles and we hope they will be as loved by fans and listeners as the old hits.” The songs of the Gipsy Kings often convey a sense of joy and celebration. What emotions do you hope to evoke in your audience during your Belgrade show? “We want to give joy to the audience. We want to share music, feelings and good vibes with all the people. And it is may- be easier, with the rhythm of the gypsy style, to transfer these feelings and emo- tions to audiences wherever we go.” What message do you have for the fans in Serbia who are eagerly awaiting your performance? “The message is simple: "Come and cel- ebrate with us a real “Gypsy Fiesta” – to celebrate life, joy and happiness together, singing and dancing along to our songs.” Looking back, what are some of the most memorable moments or highlights of your musical journey? “Well, that’s likely 20 worldwide tours, 20 million albums sold worldwide, the Grammy etc., but also the moment a concert ends and we hear the audience clapping for another encore. These are memorable moments, and we are grate- ful for that.” Are there any new projects you can already talk about? “We are preparing an album with new songs, originals, as well as covers of songs that only became famous in some countries, but not worldwide. We hope we can reignite some of them to be known by the whole world. And we have already included some of them on the playlist of this current tour.”

Najbolji španski filmovi / Spain’s best films

Novi Ju Nesbe / New Jo Nesbø

U maju izlazi „Minesota“, nova knji- ga tvorca serijala o Hariju Huleu. Ju Nes- be napisao je napetu priču o osveti, prav- di i ljudskoj prirodi.

May sees the arrival in Serbia of Min- nesota, the new book by the creator of the Harry Hole series. Jo Nesbø has penned a tense story of revenge, justice and human nature. Since Minnesota banned private prisons, it’s been much cheaper for the au- thorities to let people kill each other than to hold them in custody. Some crimes mustn’t be discovered. And someone, somewhere, is still observing through a sniper scope.
